I might have discovered an entirely new species of plant, un-described by science! I am really really excited.
I have to send specimens and photos of it to various authorities and see if they agree with me that it doesn't fit any of the known species. This is seriously my dream come true! But sorry rollinstoned... I already promised to name it after my supervisor
Great minds work alike. (I LOVE plants!) If I had had 2 grains of sense to rub together when I went to college I would NOT have majored in psychology; but, rather gone into biology and/or horticulture.
Just wondering, with millions of plants and animals "discovered" and described, how the hell would one know it could be a new species? I've seen plants and insects that I never seen before, but I wouldn't think like "oh, maybe I discovered a new species".
Because there are things called "Floras" which have keys and descriptions of plants and if you find something that doesn't fit with any of the descriptions, then you might have a new species. It is not like I just randomly came across a plant that I personally have never seen and just decided that no one had ever seen one. I have spent pretty much every second of the last week researching this entire genus to try and figure out what species it is, and it doesn't fit any of the known species. The next step of course is also to do genetic testing.
Thank you It might be a weird variation of this one species, so I am not sure yet. Either way though it is way out of its range and the plant it most resembles is super rare, so it is awesome either way.
I'd advise caution until you know a little more about this species, it might be poisonous of carnivorous.
