Some people here seem to forget that this thread is about depressing songs, not songs that cheer you up from a depression. My nominees: SHAPE OF DESPAIR - Still-Motion Sixteen minutes of pure funeral doom: one ultra-heavy guitar note everytime the bass drum sounds, which about is once every two / three seconds. This note is always the same extremely far downtuned note, and sounds on until the next one. On top of this lies a beautiful, fragile, desperate melody of lead guitar and / or synths, equally crawling. Female chants sounding from far away and a deep, gutteral deathgrunt make up for the vocals. Slow. Heavy. Desperate. Repetitive. Beautiful. MY DYING BRIDE - Sear me III Doom metal too, but less extreme. Equally beautiful at least though. Extremely emotional vocals by Aaron Stainthorpe and the most haunting depressing melody you'll ever hear. I cried over this song multiple times. Amazing. Other nominees: Metallica - Low man's lyric Metallica - Fade to black Abba - The winner takes it all Iced Earth - A question of heaven Iron Maiden - Paschendale ( not for being a sad song but for being so truthful ) Tori Amos' entire Little Earthquakes album I get the funny feeling that I posted part of this here before...
2 of my most depressing songs are by the same band: Dark horizons - by Dargaard. This song is amazing. It starts out with wind in the background blowing a gale, then a bell starts to chime aswell on top of that. Elisabeth Toriser ( the singer) beginns to chant (beautifully i might add with her amazing voice). It is doomy and gothic and i love it to pieces. Underworld domain. This is quiet compared to Dark Horizons, but equally as good. This one is kind of a duet between Elisabeth, the main singer, and Tharen, who is the male vocalist and he uses black metal vocals which really works on this song. It is, again, doomy and gothic but the music is beautiful and almost medieval. peace and love xxxxxx
I'd list all the songs if I had the time. I'm quite often depressed and I love nothing more than wallowing in my misery. I'm not the type of person to put on an upbeat beatles song and start dancing around in joy. For me depressing music makes me happy for some uncomprehendable reason. I love the melody. Perhaps it makes me feel more intune with myself, helps the thoughts flow. Radiohead - A reminder, Exit Music, How to dissapear completely, Lucky, Pyramid Song, PortisHead - It could be sweet, Numb, Nobody loves me Eric Clapton - Old Love, Lonely Stranger, Tears in Heavan Tori Amos - A sorta fairytale, Caught a lite sneeze, Jackies Strength, Landslide, Losing my Religion, Rattlesnakes, Wild horses, Hey Jupiter, Daniel, Nick Drake - Been smoking too long, Clothes of sand, Fruit tree, Milk and Honey, Riverman The Cure - Boys don't cry, Lovesong Simon and Garfunkle - Book ends, Scarbourogh fair Pink Floyd - Us and Them, Vera, Is there anybody out there Moody Blues - Lost in a lost world Loreena Mckinnett - Banks of Claudy, La Serenissima King Crimson - Epitah, I talk to the wind Bill Douglas - Sweet Rain, Into the Twillight, Dancing in the Wind, Like a wave in the sea Allison Krauss - Let me touch you for awhile, Faraway Land Coldplay Dispatch - Prince of spades Donnie Darko - Mad World Yaaadaaa...
I'll try to give some variety REM - Everybody Hurts, Losing My Religon Guns N Roses - November Rain Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World Metallica - Nothing Else Matters Pearl Jam - Last Kiss Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody Smashing Pumpkins - Today, Disarm System of a Down - ATWA Tom Petty - Free Fallin' Verve Pipe - The Freshman Everlast - what its like Eminem - Stan Coldplay - The Scientist Billy Joel - The Pianoman Live - All Over You Rolling Stones - Paint It Black The Who - a lot of their songs Collective Soul - anything
omg I laughed too hard. is that really a song? never heard of it. I don't listen to music when I'm really sad. But if I'm just average sad it's sometimes interesting to listen to songs that make me a little sad. Such as "she whispers please remember be when I am gone from here/ she whispers please remember me but not with tears/it's better to forget than remember me and cry" classic! vive the cure.
My friend loves Radiohead and Elliott Smith. I tell him it's too depressing. We always talk about, if someone were about to kill themselves, listing to Radiohead, and if you put on touch of grey, he would start dancing and smiling. Sorry...that was kind of rediculous, but true.
ya, its a short little song that orrigionally closed off the plastic ono band album, and now a longer version can be found on acoustic
THe thing about suicide is it makes other people kinda sad. I think I'll put on radiohead right now! )
Unless you call sometimes extremely horrific panic, fear dread and loathing depressing. then ya they depress hell outta me. especially How To Disappear Completely. omg. That song is NOT SAFE when stoned. lmao.
any song by a perfect circle or OTEP "BE WHO YOU ARE AND SAY WHAT YOU FEEL BECAUSE THOSE WHO MIND DON'T MATTER AND THOSE WHO MATTER DON'T MIND"
You think i'm jokin but ...if you hear this BEE GEES song you will say that after all ...i was fuckin' right...this is one of their old song from 1971 ...their sound is completely different than in their late 70's disco sound.... a song called "I don't want to Live Inside Myself"...you can check that this is a beautiful introspective sad song.
I think that if your feelin down, there aint no point in listening to happy music. What i listen to always reflects my mood. The drugs dont work by the verve is really sad, and i tend to listen o a lot of hendrix's blues when im down.
