Anyone have or know anybody that has grown their hair out and just didn't brush the whole time?! I'd love to see how that turns out! And how long it took compared to someone that started neglect with long hair already.
I'm wondering because I have short hair now and I hate it and it's growing out, but some of it is way longer than the rest, and it definitely doesn't matter if I do or do not comb it at this length haha.

By my reasoning neglect from short must be easier as it doesn't have to go through the awkward shrinkage. i have nothing to base that on though so don't hold me to that haha.

It'll probably still shrink though, right? Which means it'll stay short for a very long time?

Well it can't shrink if its not there! haha
the point of shrinkage is that the hair you have gets shorter...think about new growth, that's not 'shrinkage', its your dreads growing. so the shorter the hair the more new growth as opposed to shrinking and growth

the difficulty I found in growing them out from really short and locking them at the same time was a lot of pulling hairs out that join dreads too far away from where the strand of hair is growing out of your head. A lot of them can really hurt when you move your dreads around if they are pulling at your scalp. I imagine there would be a much bigger issue with this if they were neglected, or may result in awkwardly sectioned dreads.

the way I view neglect and free form, is that it is still your hair and I think it deserves some degree of maintenance to grow and lock in a healthy and presentable way.

I'm pretty sure that for most hair types there's a period of time where your hair is simply too short to dread. I think it would have to start getting around shoulder length for all but the most curly/thick hair types before much real separation and knotting would start. I started at almost shoulder length and now almost a year later I'm still at about shoulder length and just starting to approach a full head of dreads.

This is what I did. I used to have dreads then I got offered 1000 dollars to get it shaved. I got it shaved 3 years ago and ever since then I have just been using docta bronnas. (Neglect) my undreaded hair is averaged around 14 inches. My shortest dread is 7 inches. But most of them are like 12 or 13 or so. So there IS shrinkage. Even when you start from a shelved head
