Radio-frequency identification chips, which have found a home in applications ranging from toll road passes to smart retail shelves, may be close to taking up residence in the human body.

A Florida-based company has introduced a passive RFID chip that is compatible with human tissue, and the developer is proposing the chip for use on implantable pacemakers, defibrillators and artificial joints. The company, Applied Digital Solutions (Palm Beach, Fla.), also said that the chip could be injected through a syringe and used as a sort of "human bar code" in security applications.

Called the VeriChip, the device could open up a broad new segment for the $900 million-a-year RFID business, especially if society embraces the idea of using microchips for human identification. Applied Digital executives ultimately believe that the worldwide market for such implantable chips could reach $70 billion per year.

"The human market for this technology could be huge," said Keith Bolton, senior vice president of technology development at the company.

Futurists agree that the idea of using microchips inside the body could ultimately represent a large market opportunity, but they doubt whether this initial effort will have a significant effect on the RFID market.

have you ever read walter benjamin's book "origins of german tragic drama"?

he makes a very good point about the devil in it which is very relevant to this scene, he says "the devil is the original allegorical figure".

when benjamin talks about allegory, he isn't using the term in its traditional sense of sustained metaphor, but rather as the opposite of symbolism: where symbolism brings two things together and draws comparisons in order to show how meaning can cohere across two objects, allegory shows that meaning does NOT cohere; it fragments.

in particular, he destroys the belief in a cohesion of mind, body and spirit, by bringing us back to the materiality of matter; reminding us that we are no more than our bodies. consciousness is merely an accidental, anomolous by-product of chemical processes, not our salvation from death.

he does this by using what benjamin calls the strict joke, it is the joke being played on the security guard in this scene. it is generally a joke involving three parties, the intriguer (thewlis) the audience (the camera) and the subject (the security guard) on whom the joke is played. it is not a joke shared but a joke weaponised. when freud writes about jokes, he writes about them as being tools of de-repression, allowing us to bring up and laugh about that which we secretly fear (comedy is always linked with death). the strict joke is the opposite, the joke deliberately calculated to repress the subject more. its exactly what thewlis is doing in this scene.


first he appeals to the spiritual, builds it up; stresses the significance of spirituality, then he overturns it; in fact diabolism literally means- to overturn. undermining the spirituality of his previous statements and leaving a nothingness. or, reminding us f the nothingness which was always there, from which spirituality is an attempted escape.

thus he brings us to a state of mortal dread where we realise that we are only our bodies and no more, simply decaying matter, the ultimate realisation of mortality and its finality.

that's what has happened to the security guard at the end of the scene.

i don't believe in the devil, by the way, or god, or evil, for that matter. these are all theological concepts. interesting ones, though.

evil, as i've said, is not my concern, as i don't really believe in it, but i'd be interested to know on what evidence we convict the devil of it, he seems pretty reasonable to me in many of his incarnations. he's a materialist at worst.
