Well put Fleamarket. Speaking of soda cans and scrapping, I do quite a bit of it myself, which is why I went and made the example of it... truth be told, over the last 5 months I've managed to bring close to 3500 extra bucks turning in scrap metals, most of which plucked from road sides and dumpsters. All regular monthly income aside, scrapping alone covers our cross counrty ( NY to Ca) fuel cost, as well as the trip back. Granted we had to sit put for a while, but with time well spent, wheels will roll.

I'm back in northern Ohio- a mixed blessing I suppose. I found most of the transients came back earlier than usual. It seems southern Texas and central/southern Florida were way down this winter. I guess I'll just have to take the government's word that things are getting better! LOL!

The flea market season starts in earnest after the kids get out of school. I'll be trying to eliminate my last storage area in preparation to stay in the sunny south most of the year.

I'm also looking for an acceptable Tennessee address for my license and registration before they're due in August. North Dakota is nice and simple but it's WAY too far away with these gas prices.

But it's good to be alive and kicking. My belt buckle keeps moving farther from my back bone so I must be doing something right!

    Good luck to all.

If I had a dollar for every time that one comes up :) Thanks for the good word, although its just my girlfreind and me, the idea is a reality, just would be cooler with a group. Anything can be affordable, all just a matter living within your means. When times are tough, ya just stay put untill things arnt tough anymore. I call it going with the flow

Is that the way of it or what fleamarket?

That about hits the nail on the head. I probably meet at least one person a week who really wants to do this.

I discussed my lifestyle a guy yesterday for over an hour. He has no real income in the area, really wants to travel and has no particular reason to stay here, but... he'll never do it. For him it will be a pleasant pipe dream until it turns into a regret.

"Things" in Ohio are different this year. Very, very few van dwellers and RV'ers are in the Walmarts and truck stops. Last year I'd see a half dozen or so almost every night. No changes in store policies; the folks are just gone.

It seemed there was a hint of recovery in the air the past few weeks. But gas prices just went up as high as they've ever been in Ohio. So much for that.

A quick heads up for those passing through Gulfport, MS at I 10, exit 34. The Walmart there may or may not allow overnight parking. A tow operator hooked a chain to a couple of RV's and charged hundreds to unhook. I was there around this time, not that night, and some were living there. The workers at the Walmart service desk happily gave permision to overnight.

    Here's a link: http://forums.woodalls.com/Index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26874764/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1

If you need to stop there's a Pilot/ Flying J's an exit or two west.

Good luck and happy travels to all those living on the road.

I hear ya, and I think being at the right place at the right time is also a major factor. You guys are in such an ideal location things should be a snap. On the other hand, we are way over on the east coast, where its anything but RV friendly and people are just to caught up in the rat race to do anything interesting. But soon enough we"ll be traveling back out west where life seems to suit this lifestyle so much better. Anyway, why not go for it, only live once, make it count! cheers, Tom & Marilyn

Best is a matter of suiting your own personal lifestyle and needs. How much traveling, location and all sorts of other factors also come into play. All that aside, its usualy the wallet that knows whats best.

Incorrect---- nothing big enough to live in that is SOLID sips gas.... There are tent style campers, there are campers you load into your own truck, there are campers you can make..... We are limited by one true factor; what we are willing to think/do/imagine. Money isn't a real enough factor, as we can find ways around the cost for almost anything.

The way things are going these days, I'd say there's a strong need for more of us so called rebels.

When fuel guzzling becomes the issue, just dont move around as much or at all. Ya go with the flow at hand and make best use of whats in your sails...meaning, making use of what doesnt cost anything, and the most of what does.

This is very true, think outside the box well enough and any idea can be brought to life regardless of whats in your wallet. Reminds me of the guy who built and now lives on his own Island using soda bottles as a float base. He started it back a while ago, any of you guys read about that or see the vidoe?

Mankind started without coins or pockets, nor the need for them. Nothing has changed other than how most people think.... I personaly like the days when RV's were horse driven covered waggons, and the grass was free.

I am new to the forum and this is actually my first post.. My boyfriend and I have been really wanting to do just what you and your wife are doing:) We just don't have the rv yet. He is an electrician (I'm in real estate) and we have been looking for an old Shasta or airstream to pull...we don't mind fixing something up.
Are you guys still looking for like minded people. We live in Dallas and nobody we know thinks like we do, really. Anyway, we just saw this thread and got excited that there are more people like us around... I haven't read the whole thread yet. What kind of RV are you guys in?

Hey hello, allways good to hear from other " outside the box thinkers". We think it be fun and interesting to get this lifestyle into a small group of traveling bandits, so to speak. We know some other RVers, but more than most really dont take the lifestyle to any interesting level. The same old same old makes for such a boring waste of a book dont it.

As to our camper, just upgraded this year to a 30 ft Keystone Hornet travel trailer, much larger than our 18 ft starter camper. All in all I would tell you stay clear of fixer upper camper units, unless it minor interior repairs...anything more and its just not worth it...take it from me, I learned the hard way !

So what about this lifestyle do you dig the most?
