There is a lot of people screwing with you on this thread..... which by the way guys is cruel when the op is not an idiot. This person came looking for advice... You would be wise to follow Smelly D's advice.... she knows what she is doing. Be advised; if you go for the neglect method it generally takes a bit longer for the messy stage to calm down. This can make getting or keeping a job difficult. I would recommend Twist and rip with backcombing and strong painkiller. There are plenty of videos around Just avoid the products they are trying to sell you and don't put anything in your hair... you don't "need" anything to get dreads but time, patience and a regular enough shower

You definitely don't have to spend any money on special dread products or getting them done in a saloon (which might be really expensive as well), but it might take a year or more before they lock up completely. It's much easier if your hair is long enough (it will shrink a bit while locking) to put in a bun at the back of your head, because you can more or less hide the mess. At least that's what I do at work meetings and other occasions when I need to look more conservative :)

    Best of luck!

all you need is a few friends, quite a few hours and whatever your vice is

I'd go for the twist and rip meathod, section your hair to the way you want it,
twist the sections and rip them part, make sure there fairly tight, once all done, palmroll them. Wash them once a week and they'll be fine.

Did that 9 years ago and mine turned out fine !!

I agree with swampy, you don't even have to palm roll them or even have friends help you. I did mines half asleep by myself and mines turned out great. I like the uniqueness of each dread instead of having uniformed dreads but everyone is different. To do it yourself just tie your hair off into sections, then take out the bands and twist and rip or backcomb them. Don't forget to take out the bands because that can hinder the dreading process or even get stuck inside of them.
