Sad news. Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist of the Doors died today at age 74 in Germany from cancer. I got to see Ray live at the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love in Golden Gate park, SF. Ray's legendary keyboard playing on the Doors albums gave their music a special feel. I'm gonna miss Ray, it feels like an era is ending today. I'm going to dig out my copy of Other Voices and listen to the songs he sang. It's a pretty awesome album worth listening to if you've never heard it. He was always such an underrated keyboardist. Truly an amazing musician.
He was the true genius behind The Doors, always overshadowed by Jim Morrison. I've never understood why he didn't go on to other great successes with other bands. The world has lost one of the great rock & roll keyboardists.
I also am fortunate enough to have seen him perform live on stage (twice with Ian Astbury on vocals). Somehow I am sure he will rest in peace. He seems like a blessed soul! Eyes of the sun is my favourite of it. Not sure he sang on that track though
You said it best~ an era has ended. So glad he passed this way~ how lucky we are to have such soul in song. Rock heaven with Jim~
You can listen to the Doors music today, and it's just as great as ever. Truly timeless vibes, with Morrison as the shaman and Manzarek as the vibe master. Together they transport us to another, rockin' plane...
