My girlfriend and I have tried pretty much everything, from condoms to pills to diaphragms to rings... The only thong that has been really satisfactory for her is her IUD. Only drawback was from my end; there's a little wire thread to aid in removal, and it used to jab me QUITE painfully in tender areas when I was inside her. However, she went back and had it trimmed and I think curled slightly, and no more problems!

    It's a great, worry-free method.

Just got my mirena IUD yesterday. There was definitely some pain getting it inserted... Similar to feeling of cramps except... way stronger. After insertion yesterday it was sort of just like having a really crampy period or something. Today though I woke up feeling totally good--barely any cramping at all. I know the first 2 months of having it are meant to be an adjustment time with irregular spotting etc. but I think overall it seems like it will be worth it for me. Yay for 5 years of birth control! Covered till 2018. Fuck yeah!

    Great feeling, isn't, Emma?

Don't be surprised if you spot for three months. Actual period like bleeding? Get that checked.

Haha, yeah it hurt quite a bit. But no more cramping yesterday or today. So that's good. I know it will take a couple months for my body to get used to this. Just glad it was an option though! :)

Many of the horror stories regarding IUCDs tend to involve the older style copper ones whose method of action depends on irritation and inflammation of the endometrium to prevent the ovum from implanting. A percentage of women complain about cramping and heavy periods as a result.
The newer medicated ones prevent implantation too but the main effect is to also prevent ovulation. They don't contain copper and therefore don't increase pain and bleeding in as many women. They are also smaller and more pliable and are subsequently not as painful to insert as the copper IUCDs. That doesn't mean they are painless to put in though as the cervix still needs to be dilated and held with a medical instrument to provide counter traction.
Personally, I've had both types and would choose the medicated Mirena over the copper types any day. But that's just me.

If anyone has trouble with their partner feeling the thread/s they may need to go back and see the doctor or clinic that inserted it. They shouldn't be able to be felt and if they can it may be easily rectified. Once inserted the threads are trimmed and in about a day or two curl up around the cervix due to body heat. If too long they will be easier to feel and can be trimmed a little more. Most times this fixes the problem.

    The hormonal versions stop ovulation.
    Non hormonal do not.

What's so funny about the IUD is hat we are not 100 percent sure why it works.
All we know is apricot pits worked in camels, and the same theory works in women.

On the threads they also soften a bit over time and curl themselves along the cervix.
One endowed partner said he felt the threads at first, they didn't hurt except at one angle, and since then he hasn't noticed them.

In fact, he'd asked if I still had it.

I've had the copper T for almost 3 years. It's good for 8 years and it's been really great for me because the pill was having negative effects. I don't have any children and my doctor still recommended it for me. It was prolly the most pain I've ever felt in my life getting it inserted but the clinic I went to was very gentle and made it as comfortable for me as possible.

As far as the side effects, I have heavy periods and the cramps are back but I haven't had any other issues. No excessive weight gain, no excessive crazy (due to hormonal reactions) that I had from the pill.

I don't have any plans to have children with my partner so if it causes infertility I'm ok with that. But it's the best thing I have done to take responsibility for my body and my choice to not procreate. My partner has said that after the 8 years is up and I have it removed he will get a vasectomy instead of me getting another one because he knows how painful it was for me to get it done. :)
