Is it possible to develope clinical depression from birth control pills? I was just wondering if maybe they could cause some sort of chemical imbalance which could lead to that sort of reaction?

fuck the pill, man that shit sucks. if youre really concerned, then i would consider going off the pill. i decided to quit taking the pill because i smoke, and i just feel so much better. really, i am starting to think that the pill is really bad for you. lately i have been hearing all kinds of terrible things about it.

ya know that depends I have low blood pressure so smoking and taking the pill at the same time doesn't affect me. medical professionals generalize too much

hmm, sounds like a good question for a qualified physician to me. I mean, yes, there's definately the possibility thereof. Chemicals and hormones getting mucked with, what fun. My bc does list depression as a possible sideaffect (don't know if would be classified as clinical or not, but still). Talk to your doc who gave you the pills, then see if you can find yourself a good counsellor to talk about stuff, it can really help. If you're still in school, there should be something available.

Thanks for answering everyone...I'm going to ask my doc next time I see her...I really wish I could stop taking it, but my overys grow these cysts and they get really bad, the last one cost me and overy in surgery and I'm really frightened about loosing the other one...so I really need to take all measures given to me to ensure I hold on to this last one...which so far is only birth control pills...Still It's concerning the effects they are having on my mental health...

p.s. thanks bloody_kisses I'll see if switching to yasmin makes a difference next time I see my doctor...

I switched from my usual (Ovcon) to the patch this summer. It made me crazy. I would get horrible anxiety attacks, pissed off and cry hysterically over nothing, etc. I switched back to ovcon and am back to normal. Though, I still get cysts even though I am on bc....

Yeah, some birth-control pills can make you depressed.
It's all hormones, and thus you react like you would at any time where the hormones are raging. For instance before your period and during pregnancy, you might get depressed and have awful mood-swings, and since the pill more or less tricks your body into thinking that you're pregnant, depression and mood swings is a natural side-effect.
I wasn't allowed to start with the pill until I had used my anti-depressants for two months, because the doctor didn't want the pill to make my depression more severe.

Speaking of the pill, has anyone experienced a lower sex drive while on the pill?
If not, what pills do you use?
i use Trionetta, and I know it's a side-effect, but the pill is more practical for me, so i don't want to go off it. Is there any other pills that don't have lower sex drive as a side effect?
