my husband hates my dreads :(

My DH and I made a compromise....He agrees to let me keep my dreads and I agree to shave my armpits.

 

I only made it to page three so forgive me if this has been said but just avoid this argument all together.

Don't attempt to dress him and he shouldn't attempt to style your hair. How is it fair for you to call his clothes ugly, but he has to love your dreads?

 

Samee I tell my man when to shave and cut his hair.



That's only cause he's in the Navy though. He tends to forget and get out of regs.


And McFuddy you're on point with how marriages (shit relationships in general) are about COMPROMISE.

 

People always cared what their partners look like. If your mate gained 50 pounds during the relationship you would notice. Yeah, some people act holy and say they wouldn't notice but they would. And they have every right to speak up about it. It's shouldn't be a deal breaker but it's definitely something to discuss if it legitimately bothers them.
It's NOT a new phenomenon.

So we are in the same boat! my dh misses my long silky hair so much that he has dreams about it. haha he said this is not my best look. i agree. i'm sporting a birds nest on my head. he still supports me tho. when we met he had very long hair. ooooh how it miss that hair. anyways he chopped it off stopped wearing tye dyes and many other things. point is when people grow we have to change as well. it's part of life. you dreads are beautiful. in time he will feel the same. hugs

 

I am glad you posted here. My boyfriend, that I do for-see myself being with for this lifetime also really really really dislikes my dreads. I started them almost one year ago : ) When I started them, I was on the road travelling the states and people always complimented them and told me how beautiful they were. Then after they were in for about five months I can back to hometown. My mom is constantly picking on me saying I have dirt wads hanging from head. The girls I know tell me that they are ugly and don't even look like dreads and that if I was so set on having them I should have had them professionally done so that they would at least look right. My boyfriend also makes fairly regular negative comments about them too... mostly just saying he wishes I would cut them out and picking around with me takes out his pocket knife and gets close my head. I just tell him to get over it and he says he will because he loves me, but he really does not like my hair. He is getting over it and the biggest issue now is cuddling... he can not stand for my hair to touch him while we are sleeping. Now he just puts a blanket or pillow over my dreads while we sleep so we can still cuddle. At first it really annoyed me, but I got over that, just like he is getting over the dreads. It's a compromise that we had to make so that we can cuddle. I did have about thirty dreads, but now I only have about fifteen. I brushed out the ones in the front for several reasons.... the biggest is because I am going for a teaching job in a conservative area. Also, it makes cuddling easier for us cause now all my dreads are in the back. Plus I just got tired of people around here constantly telling me how ugly my hair is and commenting that my hair used to be so beautiful. Which I did have beautiful hair and I still do, to me. Some of the hair I brushed is starting to dread again and I am glad cause I do miss having all of hair dreaded... I do not really see the point in having dreads if it is just half of hair, but I really do have to make that compromise to get a teaching job where I live. I suppose I can look at it as a representation of the duality in myself and all life on the planet. Anyways, I am glad you shared your experience and thank you for letting me share mine
