We had chickens when I was young. I remember sitting on the back step (stoop) with the shotgun on rat patrol when we had the babies. Never did see a rat, my father was just taking the piss, old ****. I'm allowed to say that because he is still alive and I will tell him I called him that.
My parents have some. Fresh eggs are only a 30 minute drive for me. The yokes can be hard to cook all the way because they're so fresh. Fresh made chicken and dumplings are awesome.
Because usually they both want to be the alpha male at some point and might fight eachother until one or both are dead.
might have been me, i think i've commented on such posts before. i don't own any, but my parents always have. although they're down to one right now and i'm not sure if they plan on getting any more. regarding the smell, i think they probably have the least offensive odor out of the major farm animals. pigs are the worst.
Chicken poop is a lot worse than cow poop. I can't say for other poop smells but I know chickens get funky!
There were chickens at my old place. It was great, they eat a lot of scraps (you can't give them all food scraps but you can give them a lot of different things), and the eggs were fantastic. Best part was - you knew where the eggs came from and that the chickens were happy. No factory farm shit!
I had 20 chickens and then a neighbor's dog broke into our yard by digging under the fence and killed every single one of them. Actually the dog just maimed and horribly injured a lot of them and then we had to mercy kill them... probably one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. I woke up to hear the sound of the chickens screaming.
That is absolutely horrible! I would feel so bad. Poor chickens! I would love to have a safe home for some feathered friends. sounds like a symbiotic relationship.
It was just such a waste... The dog didn't even eat them, it was just enjoying the slaughter. So those chickens died and couldn't even be used after death because they were so mauled. Not to mention that we got some of our money from selling the eggs. But mostly I just felt that it was a terrible end for the chickens.
My boyfriend pretty much threatened them into giving us some minor compensation. At first they weren't willing to do anything.
Chickens are great for organic gardens as you can let them loose in the garden and they will eat the bugs. We had chickens when I was young, I had to clean the coop and I can still remember my uncle cutting off their heads and watching them run around headless for awhile. Weasels would get them also. My Uncle lost a bunch when the weasels attacked his elevated coop. He had chicken wire on the bottom so the waste would fall through and the weasels ate the feet off the chickens, gross. Recently we had ducks and geese and a very large pond for them to shelter in, but coons, coyotes, or a bobcat eventually got the ducks. The geese were pretty independent and made out alright, plus you can leave them on their own without having to feed them. Never got any eggs.
Chickens are not chicken! When I was in Florida on 10 acres,I had about 60 of 'em. One day a hen and her chicks were scratching around in the yard and the hen saw a hawk diving toward her and her chicks. I just happened to be looking and saw the hawk also. When the hawk was just about to grab a chick, the chicken lunged at the hawk, knocked it off course and the hawk was so surprised,I suppose, that it flew away. I loved that little hen. Had about 10 roosters and they would fly up into the trees at night to nest. They all seemed to get along.
No, the only chickens i have are in the freezer waiting to be roasted, grilled, or baked :2thumbsup: Hotwater
Good way to get your garden ett as well, if not plowed under. My chickens cultivate every inch of three acres that they have access to. I keep them out of my vegetable garden!
About two years ago my mum and I took two battery hens home and placed the two of them in an empty pen on the property we were renting. Poor little buggers probably stood there on the grass and dirt for a long while before they realized they were allowed to move about. After a few days, they vanished. For all I know, they're wondering around a national park close by the property. It's possible... the old landlord recons he saw a camel wondering around once.
that was kind of the reason i made the post, i could guess it was iminmy that said i have a homebody hen because it would never go farther than 5 feet from the back door. but when i made this post it was because it finally wandered all the way to the other end of my yard (if i had to guess its a half acre away) some interesting stories here dont have time to respond at the moment but will be back.
