Did hippies announce themselves as "hippies" or did it even matter to them?

I was just wondering. I know a lot of what they did was based on action, but did they actually say to people, "Yeah, I'm a hippie." or did they just do their own thing?

originally it was used kind of derogatorily as in, "you dirty, smelly, long-haired hippie'" said in a growling redneck snarl

It's funny but hippies tend to object to being labeled as hippies.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've just always wondered. Now all I can think to myself is "duh".

I only started to refer to myself as such when it became unfashionable to be one. Otherwise - head, freak, etc.

I never heard anyone refer to themselves as a hippie. It was a term of derision. I knew a guy that everyone called Hippie Ralph, it wasn't a compliment, it meant that he was trying too hard to fit the stereotype and it was a bit pathetic. Nice guy, though.
