My breastfed baberz has poopies ranging in olive green to a bright teal color...any idea what is causing this strange event? I've been told that it's what I'm eating. I've been eating lots of differant things so it's hard to figure out. I know that it's normal, but I'm just curious if anyone knows.

I think it is iron that causes the green poops. Are you still taking prenantals, they are loaded with iron. But unless it is actually cause the baby problems, then I would not stop taking them

Sometimes overactive letdown can cause green stool. Does your baby really gulp, does your milk spray? Does he have a hard time keeping up with the flow? Try taking him off during the letdown, when you are spraying and he starts gulping and then putting him back on. (let the milk flow into a clean rag for a few seconds and then let him nurse again) Make sure he finishes the first breast first. Don't be in a hurry to get to the second breast. If you have a huge supply he may not even need the second breast at every feeding. Let him decide how long the feeding should be (it will be longer if you take him off during letdown and he will get to the hindmilk and really fill up) and won't need the second breast every feeding.

I don't think black beans will cause green poops.

Try going to www.lalecheleague.org and putting "over active letdown" into the search engine. It has some good articles on the issue.

If you don't have OAL, you may be waiting too long between feedings and he may be pigging out and gulping too much lactose, rather than getting the hindmilk. The longer you go between feedings, the more the baby will gulp, and the more tummy problems you will have. DO NOT schedule feedings, let the baby decide, with no more than two hours or so between feedings during the day, and not much more than that at night.

How old is he? How is he gaining?

Good luck, I'll check back to see how ya'll are doing.

Oh and you don't need prenatals when you are breastfeeding. Pregnancy is a MUCH more difficult state of your body than lactation, you simply don't need all the overdosed vitamins and minerals which are in prenates. NO ONE needs the amount of iron some of those contain. When you are breastfeeding you don't need any more iron than a non pregnant, non breastfeeding womyn. Eat good food, it is all you will need. The prenates will cause more problems than they solve.
