"And if you should die explainin' how the things that they complain about, "Are things they could be changin', who do you think's gonna care?" There were other lonely singers in a world turned deaf and blind, Who were crucified for what they tried to show. And their voices have been scattered by the swirling winds of time. 'Cos the truth remains that no-one wants to know.
The problems with generalizing all music are obvious.. but I'd say the main problems are the over estimating of the value of lyrics in general and the use of formulaic models for creating a profitable musical product. I'm not knowledgeable enough in what genres actually mean, nor naive enough to think that everyone has the same idea in mind when they think of a particular genre. So a specific example of good mainstream music is Outkast (might not be popular anymore i dunno). Outkast (read: Andre 3000) produces quality music-- The lyrics are interesting and he actually tells a story and delivers it in a creative, well-textured manner. But for me lyrics are always secondary, they can even be a hindrance, a muddying up of what, in my opinion, the real art is --- competent use of diatonic music (with deft chromaticism), texture, phrasing, novelty, rhythm . There are those that love poetry and so when they hear a well crafted line they get pleasure from it, or get a feeling of connectedness through a shared experience, or whatever it is. For me that is why I like to read certain philosophers and writers.. I dont get that much out of poetry.. that is in comparison to what I truly value, the components of music i said before Music should not be expected to convey a concept. Or even a particular emotion, because when it comes down to it I never feel sad while listening to something composed in a Minor key. I feel nothing but beauty when listening to the first movement of Moonlight Sonata, and nothing but a sort of exhilarated beauty when listening to the third movement. The main point is it should sound good. It should make your mind move. Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement (sorry not sure how to embed) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zucBfXpCA6s&feature=channel Gripe: In regards to the percussion in rap: there is too much bass on 1 and 3 and WAAY to much treble on 2 and 4. It could be that its not how it was originally equalized and a lot people just dont know how to make their systems sound good. But , it makes me think people have damaged their ears because of the their seeming imperviousness to incredibly high treble coming from the high hat and snare strikes.
Today's pop music.... catchy but empty. its fun for like a day, then i'm sick of it. But The Beatles? I listen to that over and over again and it still hasn't gotten old in years.
Mainstream pop is usually pretty pathetic... But there is a lot of really good pop that goes unnoticed though... Dan Black is a great example...
The problem is not only with musicwriters. Its with the whole young generation.People now listen Bieber/Minaj soforth ( i dont mean to disrespect anyone - i just dont like thiese ''artists'').Many bands now want to be such because of the alcohol/drugs/bitches. Too much great songs have appeared maybe and young people cant cope with that, they cant invent someting new and interesting as it used to be.
I think there is a lot of good new music these days.... You just arent looking in the right places. Stop listening to the pop stations.
It doesn't matter, people still listen to it, gay ass bitches get paid for shitty productions. Meanwhile good folks in garage bands that are actually quite decent have to put up with 15 audience members paying an entry fee of €5-10 at the local metal club XD
Pop music has always sucked. Before Justin Beiber and One Direction we had NSync and the Backstreet Boys, and before that New Kids on the Block it goes all they way back to the 50s and 60s. Pop music generates a lot of revenue for the media companies thats why it's so heavily marketed. Unfortunately most people will listen to whatever music is spoon fed to them at the time. There's still good music out there but you have to find it, and most people don't take the time to do that.
There's always been shitty music but the real problem is there are no godlike bands anymore. We don't have that new unifying band of greatness that could fill up an arena. But dig around a little deeper in the underground and you're sure to find something great. A band worthy of being on the same scale as your Zeppelin's or what have you. Not to sound like a hipster douche but maintream rock is dead. It's all watered down horse shit these days, played by a bunch of people who can't write a song with any REAL feeling. It's all so safe now. Although a good chunk of the music I listen to would never get the time of day on the radio, I can sympathize. Where are the guitar hero's or crazy singers of today? All we have are these lame professional dickheads that look like Good Charlotte or some crap. I bet they don't even throw TV's out of hotel rooms or have coke-induced orgies on airplanes like REAL rock stars do. Pussies... There are musicians who look up to guys like Jimmy Page. Who the fuck looks up to DJ Ashba?

I'd rather die than give you control. > They Just Don't Write'em Like That Anymore!!
You guys need to listen to Animal Collective and some of the other underground bands around right now, especially the album "Centipede Hz". Really missing out on the modern hippie music movement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO_rgQOYK7o"]Animal Collective - Centipede Hz [Full Album] - YouTube I know I already posted this in the "Teen hippies??" thread, but just trying to help. This album has def got me through some rough times, and I feel these guys don't get enough credit sometimes. I also think something big is going to happen music-wise in June, so I honestly wouldn't fret. Still, enjoy the classics. Music, at its core, has no time. Yep, yep, yep! Excuses, excuses. You have the Internet, my friend! I'm not one to actually listen to the radio.
Yep, they got us here in the west too... After the 1996 Telecommunications act was passed,(which could have been contested if we weren't such fucking sheeple) they gobbled up everything in sight, now they own more air than CBS, and ABC, who only own about 1/5 the stations. This is the same company that "blacklisted" certain songs after 911, including Cat Stevens' Peace Train and John Lennon's Imagine... It's also been alleged that Clear channel employ mob like business tactics, literal arm-twisting and otherwise illegally use their dominance of the airwaves to control the live entertainment industry... IMO, Clear channel is the main culprit in the all but utter destruction of diversity in media today. :bomb:
There is lots of good stuff for everyone out there but if you go on what is played on the mainstream channels or perhaps radio in general you might be dissappointed in what today's music got to offer. And even if you dig in the other genres you might get dissappointed because music is often specialized or focussing on a specific sound so subgenres and bands can be really different and if you look for something you really like you might find one band good and the other shit. It's very subjective. For example, I would never recommend Animal collective to another person and I could name lots of today's bands that are totally rocking my world (Siena Root, Endless Boogie, Orange Sunshine, Eartless, etc.) but are nothing special to another. Point is if you don't search for what you are looking for you will always get dissappointed in the music of your day. The only thing that's ruined is pop music and there's lots and lots more so don't whine about what you don't like musicwise but focus on the good stuff.
