i had to start another thread because, this is just too much for me. and i thought my life was bad. now we're starting to get the survivor's stories, some film footage from the disaster, and now i've even heard stuff about land mines in sri lanka being blown up from the wave. i just want to rip my heart out, sad isn't even the word. it's definitely the shock felt around the world... whether it be the actual shock or the shock from the disaster. it is the largest natural disaster of our lifetime, the costliest nastural disaster EVER, and who knows what kind of economic effects this will have for years to come. i even feel bad sitting by my computer talking about it and doing nothing (right now)...

I feel so bad right now because I found out today that my second cousin who I was very close to when i was little has a month to live, she has sotmach cancer. My great aunt and uncle are touring the suth pacific and australia and can't gt a flight home to be with here because of the disaster. I feel bad because I basically feel like fuck everyone else, I want them to get home. I know this is selfish because thousands of people who I don't know have lost mothers, daughters, fathers borthers and sisters, yet after hearing the news of my cousin I just don't care as much as I should.

You know what I hate? After 9/11, every American wanted and expected the support of everyone around the world. Now, when other people face a disaster, we don't care. The news networks are hardly covering this at all from what I can see. It's disgusting... I guess most Americans would rather shop for shitty holiday gifts than actually care about anything important.

yall cant be serious... I see it all over tv. I still dont know where you people are coming from. Ive seen it on cnn, cspan, the weather channel, fox news....... all over the place.. what kind of coverage do yall expect, really? you think everyone should stop what they are doing and grieve over what happened? disasters happen all the time.

This mans TV must be hooked to his VCR with an old program in it. I cant hardly get anything but this on mine. As for 911 I do not remember much of anyone rushing to our aid except a select few. I do remember us running to the aid of Mexico when they had a bad earthquake, and we sent relief help to numerous others. What is really sad is that the news does not cover the aid we do send and have sent. I have 2 friends who have been deployed there from our hated US Army, they are field doctors, hmm CNN missed that one. Before you enjoy the bliss of what garbage the news feeds you, look for honest sources.

He ruined your thread here by correcting a bold face lie! I mean your right they have not turned all the channels at once to this and kept it locked in there but again this happens every year to many countries. It is sad, it is something that should not happen but does. Everyone here should be gratefull they have what they have and if they really care get off there ass and help! It is good to poor your heart out but they cant hear you, feel you and sadly it is an effort that will do nothing for them. Send money, volunteer, go into college into a field that may help them.

Now you will be all pissed off at me but I hate miss informed people saying how bad the American public is to the rest of the world. Our goverment sucks but our media sucks more.

I do feel compassion and Im sorry for what happened. I already said Id be praying for them..... but do you honestly think you really need to crawl into a ball and grieve for them??? I mean, you dont even know these people. plus, the news media is covering this disaster, ad nauseum already. I dont think you people are ever satisfied. there are other things to report than just one disaster. how many times do they have to mention there was a 9.0 earthquake with devastating tsunamis that killed thousands of people in sri lanka, kenya, somalia, india and thailand, amoung those killed in indonesia from the earthquake? what all is there to report other than the death count so far, and the possible dangers they could be going through while they have no clean water? how can you cover 24 hours of news with one event??

plus I have a right to my opinion on this matter, and what are you trying to do, supress my thoughts?? I thought hippies were supposed to be open to other people's opinions. its hardly the case here, you just whine and moan and tell them to leave. how open minded.

    hear, hear.

he's right. empathy is appropriate, as is media coverage, and from what i've been seeing, both have been gotten. it's foolish to be so overcome with grief as to want to ball up and cry; to live is experience tragedy, but life goes on.

Hey tragedy affects people in different ways. I feel terrible for those people certainly as I'm sure everyone does. For some people it does create grief, whether you think its warranted or not. Honestly, why knock the man if that's the way he feels about the situation?

Actually, I think the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius at Pompeii was more devastating. But this certainly is a tragedy. I'd do something about it, if I had the connections.
