I can agree at least somewhat with 911 being over-hyped and that's coming from someone who lost their college roomate in the tragedy. The thing about 911 that sickens me the most is people making money off of it - all the books, movies etc.

If anything I think people attacked you because you somewhat said fuck em' they are half way around the world - we should be focusing more of our attention at home.

There are billions and billions of dollars spent at home every year in social aid.

The US sends millions every year to Africa in helping with the AIDS epedemic.

The money spent in Florida was more than fair too. I was down there, 20 miles away from Punta Gorda when Charlie hit and destroyed a community. Do you think that they should have received no aid at all?

I can also respect you not wanting to give money to charitable organizations that you are not certain where your money is going. I support rock the earth, because I know that all of the money that goes there is going to good causes - 100% of it.

I also agree that its is sad that it often takes great tragedy for the masses to open their eyes and realize the importance of helping others.

Poor and homeless people need help without question. You giving spare change to a homeless person is a good thing, more people should do it. I do think that some homeless people are in that situation due to poor decisions on their part (drug and alcohol abuse, poor work ethic etc), but even those people deserve help.

I guess my question is why are you chastising people for wanting to reach out for these people half way around the world? What is so wrong with it?

no matter how you look at it.

Regardless how much money this or other countries around the world dedicate to the 'relief fund' nobody can provide the one thing that the effected areas need the most right now.....
somebody to turn to for answers, to the hardest questions to answer at this point.
While the need for food and clean water over the next few days will start to escalate among the survivors in the demolished areas, the most critical issue right now should be what to do with the dead.
If the leaders of the most effected areas don't step up in the next 12 hours and accept the fact that they have a large amount of bodies to properly dispose of in a timely fashion,,
the amount of bodies they have to eventually dispose of will start to multiply.

Nobody is taking into consideration the condition of the bodies that will be floating to shore over the next few days, and nobody is considering the best posibility of eliminating widespread disease.

They have to incinerate the dead a.s.a.p.

Sometimes the only way to preserve the future is to destroy the victims of your present.
    oh, and btw,
    Merry X-Mas!

all Im saying is, no one knows if that aid is actually getting to the people or not. how do you honestly know?? Id rather give my money to someone or some people that I actually know is going to good use. people can send money to charitable organizations if that makes them feel better, but I wont. my thoughts and prayers will be with them though. Im just sick of the people that think they need to help people out when disasters happen, yet you see homeless people on the street all the time, and do you think they stop and give the person some change??

You know often times I'm hesitant to give homeless people money on the street as I suspect that its going towards booze. At least thats the case around here - those that do panhandle tend to be drunk. If I had spare money to give towards that cause, I'd be more inclined to give it to the local homeless shelter.

madcrappie~it's not an either/or thing. it's okay to help people that you'll never meet in this lifetime. and it's okay to help out people in our own communities. i'm well aware that money that's donated may not be spent in the best way possible, but i'm hopeful that most of it will go to help the people who need it most.

ok, i have thoughts on homelessness and all... but...

lets say if 5 million people were to get displaced all of a sudden, had to worry about not eating, not drinking clean water, and catching some sort of new disease from the bodies rotting on their beaches, why not help?

If there is anything you can do, in any situation, then do it. Regardless if it is because of a tragedy for not. Nuff said.

Dude, I'm sad and all for those affected by the tragedy, but, um, should life stop or something because of it, even for those not quite so affected by it?

Maybe the next book by every novelist on earth should be about this tragedy? Maybe the next six t.v. movies should be about it too?

I mean, it's one thing to sympathize, but it's not insensitive or something to not dwell on it. Just because a tragedy happens does not mean that other things, like holiday economic trends, are not still important to people. The business of living is living. Dying is gonna happen no matter what. Yesterday, some thousands of people died because of an undersea earthquake. It's obviously upset you tremendously. But in that same day, many more thousands died of disease, starvation, and violence. If the tsunami hadn't happened, would you be still upset about all the other unpleasant death going on?

Come on, man, get a grip.

and you do have to be honest about how much is going to the cause mad.....esp large charities like that....but anyway, everyone can be a skeptic about everything..
its funny that its do this or that...cause i donated my car to the diabeties foundation, all my daughters clothes as she outgrows them to needy children, food and money to charities for people who need it, and to this cause too....yes i dont know that all the money is going there, but at least i feel like i am doing what i can, everywhere that i can. its not like we have to give a homeless person a meal or help across the world...you can do both...
