What are the differences? The fumarate requires somewhat larger doses (e.g. 24.73mg of the fumarate equals 20mg of the freebase); the fumarate is more stable, and therefore, it will keep longer under proper storage conditions.

If I get the fumarate salt, what do I need to do to take it safely? You should have a good set and setting, a proper scale, and no other substances in your system, particularly anti-depressants or MAOI's.

Is it smarter to wait for the freebase? If you have a dark freezer that can reach -20C, an airtight container, desiccant and oxygen absorbers, then yes. Be aware that the fumarate is rather fragile as well, so you will need all of the above except the freezer -- a dark fridge set to 2C should keep it fine for at least several months.
