strikes India, Indonesia, Maldives, Thailand, Malasia and Sri Lanka, some of them being the poorest nations on earth! Over 10 thousand dead, 1 million homeless! And the death toll is very likely to rise. 10 thousand dead means at least 60 thousand mourning people! Fuck that shit! I've experienced 7.4 earthquake for 46 seconds I thought it was the judgement day and the ground was shattering. It just wouldnt stop for 46 seconds with an ear itching noise coming down from the earth, the dogs barking and glassware breaking all around the house. even between 7.4 and 7.8 there is a HUGE difference, like 40 times bigger on the Richter scale. But 8.9 is fucking Impossibly powerful. I mean continents move, mountains form with that much energy. Worst of all is the aftermath, the Tsunamis... What a disaster. I'm terribly sorry for the victims.
The latest updates are the earthquake registered a 9.0 on the Richter and 11.5k dead. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqinthenews/2004/usslav/ By comparison, the earthquake hitting Alaska in 1964 was 9.2 on the Richter.
I heard about a big one in the paper today occuring between Australia and Antarctica, which rattled houses in Tasmania. There must be some major techtonic movement going on down under to cause two very large earthquakes so close to each other (relatively speaking) in so near a time. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Quakes/ussjal.htm
i can't look at an article without feeling completely heartbroken for these thousands and thousands of people i can't even begin to imagine their suffering has anyone seen/heard of ways we can help with relief efforts?
The EU is planning to give 3 million euros! They can save the fish with that money. According to what I've read in the paper donations are at the level of "thousand dollars". Way too low. Geologists say that a 1000 km "faille" was broken. (dont know the word for the layers that get broken during the quake). They say the power released is vaguely equal to the energy of 175 atomic bombs
Those vast earthquakes sound fun. but with 6 billion people, youd think a couple thousand deaths would be a relief (overpopulation. the ones that have, and will die, hopefully they wont suffer to much and be put out of misery.
"The EU is planning to give 3 million euros!" 3 million euros will go a long way in thailand...not that its anywhere near enough to compensate for the losses, but its a start. its a very sad situation over there...my heart goes out to those who need it
I can't even imagine how huge a 9.0 earthquake would be, but here is some information I've heard regarding it, to give people an idea of the power involved: 1. This is the biggest earthquake in the world in 40 years, when a 9.2 earthquake hit Alaska. 2. In terms of monetary value, this is the most destructive earthquake in the history of civilization. 3. If this earthquake had hit the San Andreas Fault instead of the Indian Ocean, it would bankrupt the United States. The energy it released would break Washington, Oregon, California, and Baja California away from North America. 4. This earthquake briefly disturbed the earth's rotation, and knocked the planet out of its orbit. 5. Remember, the Richter scale is logarithmic, so a 9.0 earthquake is ten times more powerful than a 8.0 earthquake, and a hundred times more powerful than a 7.0 earthquake. In comparison, the Missouri earthquake of 1811 was a 8.0, the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a 7.8, and the San Francisco earthquake of 1989 was a 6.7. If the earthquake had been a 10.0 instead of a 9.0, it would have sent large chunks of land flying out of the atmosphere into space. 6. As devastating as this was, we are lucky that it struck in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Even with a buffer zone of thousands of miles, the earthquake was felt as far away as the Sudan and Antarctica. The resulting tsunamis killed people from Somalia to Indonesia.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/ this map is showing seismic activity all over the place i hope that the tectonic plates settle in and stay put.
whoa shakezulla some nice knowledge, but how did it knock us out of orbit since its an internal movement on external? btw, how does that logarthmic or whatever work?
it amazes me how powerful our Earth can be and how little we can do to stop it. We have cell phones that let us talk instantly to someone across the world, but we cannot stop nature. Even if we were to burn every inch of the planet, patches of grass would pop up somewhere and the earth would begin again.
It was bound to happen that area is so old world, all remnants of lost continents that have already most likely sunken into the sea. The remainder is just catching up now.
There are no "sunken continents" or any nonsense of the kind. A basic understanding of plate tectonics and polar ice caps is all that you need to figure that out.
Locals say that everywhere the dead have started to stink already and things gonna get worse under the tropical climate with midday showers making contagious illnesses far worse! If we consider that most of these people have already been dying because of being unable to pay for their curable diseases under normal circumstances, I wonder which one is the worst disaster of our century, this 9.0 earthquake or the global social numbness that rocks the planet worse off.
they say that the plates moved a good 98 feet... i think in "standard" earthquakes plates move a couple of inches or so.
