I'm sorry, but from what I've ever heard of Kwanza, it's just a bullshit made-up "holiday" that some dude came up with, and the reason is just to get "equal time" with "whitey" who has, supposedly, some sort of unfair "advantage" by "owning" Christmas and Hanukah. I ask, why the fuck does a racial or ethnic group need to get equal time? Isn't that a juvenile, petulant thing? Like little kids comparing the size of their respective slices of pie? -Jeffrey
heh actually it's a cultural tradition not a made up holiday. I found some kwanza projects to be done with my kids and I heard they had a blast. funny how 6 year olds posses open mindedness that some adults do not.
Wow jeff... all holidays are bull shit made up holidays... but i suggest you learn more about kwanza.
Not too dumb still to know that you should have made "everyday" two words. So, you bitch (excellent choice of words, that) all the time that I follow you -- stalk you, and bother you in these threads... but now you are the first respondent to mine, and all you do here, all you contribute, is to insult me. You are such a low scrunt. There is nothing redeeming about you. -Jeffrey
If they're all bullshit as you say -- and I believe they are -- what would be the point of me learning more about Kwanza if it's just, as you said, bullshit? Or did you not mean "ALL holidays," just "all except Kwanza the non-bullshit holiday"? Start me off. Tell me about the origin and nature of Kwanza, Mui. I don't mind learning. If I don't like what I learn, I'll just drop it from my mind and no harm done. -Jeffrey
whats wrong with african-americans celebrating their heritage? i don't see anything wrong with it, why do you?
Well you cant judge something until you learn about it, and I know there is much more to kwanza than what you've said so far... and although everything is bullshit, it is no excuse to make false assumptions about the origins of the holiday... Im not teaching you. Google it. Im going to bed. Peace.
damn jeffrey your name holds true, you're such a peaceful guy. oh I had a gay old time not wearing my seatbealt today untill i realized it 10 minutes later.
Whatever, Lynsey. Are you laying some claim to being better or more mature than I am? Making snide comments about stuff I have talked about in longago threads? That's how you show where I'm a bad guy? Someone, please -- if it's so easy, and I'm so wrong, tell me what the origin of the recent, American "celebration" of the "holiday" Kwanza is. Don't cop out and tell me to google it. Just teach it. -Jeffrey
Kwanza is a non-religious African-American holiday celebrated for seven days starting on Dec. 26 thru Jan. 1. Created by Dr. Maulana Karenga. He founded a cultural organization and started to research African harvest celebrations. He combined several harvest celebrations from different tribes to form a basis for Kwanza. Kwanza, is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili. Kwanza is not a strict holiday, in that families can celebrate it in a unique way for the family. Songs, dances, drums, storytellin, poetry, meals are often included in the celebration through the 7 nights. a candle is lit on every night. Kwanza includes 7 priniciples which contribute to helping the African-American community. Also, includes 7 basic symbols that represent values and concepts of African culture. after lighting a candle, the family gathers and discuss the meaning of Kwanza. Not all families celebrate Kwanza the same way. Not all African-Americans celebrate Kwanza.
well christmas is a bullshit made up holiday too, that is supposed to celebrate the birth of christ. the only reason why they put it in december was to combat against the pagan holiday (just like halloween). the exact date of christs birth was never written in the bible (or could be determined by the bible like they could with jesus's death), so they just created a day for it and passed it off as a holy day (like one of the holiest days of the year). when scientists, scholars, and anthropologists found out that jesus was not born in december, but more around march/april, the church got around their ignorance by claiming that they just made that holiday to celebrate the life of christ. still, its a bullshit holiday made up by the catholics/christians to compete against the pagans. so I dont see where you can judge kwanza's fakeness, jeffrey, sorry. but, I dont agree with the whole black history month thing either...... are there any months dedicated to the irish? or germans? or mexicans?? or asians?? or indians??? no. why do we have to have a month to where we have to remember black history??
ok, even if there is, is it promoted and commercialized as much as black history month?? do you see any specials about celebrating the life and times of chief joseph??? NO! the whole month is bullshit, and then you hear people complaining that its the shortest and the coldest month of the year. whatever, at least you have a freekin holiday. DO I have a holiday or month to celebrate where I came from??? NO. Im fuckin german. (oh I guess we have octoberfest, if that counts)
um, ok... i wasn't defending it or anything, just correcting your previous post. i never let you know how i felt about it so please don't assume.
IM not assuming anything. I dont know how you feel about the month. I was just stating if there are any other months that promote any other ethnicity, its not as commercialized as black history month. thats all.
i thought that was directed towards me, but i could very well be wrong... you know, the part where you said "you"...
ahh when I say "you" I dont necessarily mean you... I usually direct it towards more people. and in this thread, I was indeed referring to the people who complain about the month being too short. I could bring out my southern redneck in me and say "yall" or "yews" but I will save you people from that.
