I know midgets prefer to be called dwarves, but unless they're carrying a little hammer or an axe, that's just not happening.

Why is it even offensive to them to be called a midget anyway? Who cares? I mean, dwarf does sound much cooler, but still. Some of them get pretty butthurt about it and I never understood why.

This is the first time I have heard of that they prefer to be called dwarves, as though they belonged in a Snow White fairy tale.

Yeah haha, I can't see why they would prefer to be called dwarf. I thought they preferred little people but when you meet them on the street perhaps it's better to adress them with miss or mister instead of dwarf or midget :D :p In my opinion midget is valid enough but ok, if they don't like it.

I always have to think of Warwick Davis when I hear something about midgets. And I always have to think of Ricky Gervais when I think of Warwick Davis. Such legends!

Btw, a dwarf isn't a fairytale creature, like a fairy or dragon, so why does a person who has dwarfism need to be carrying an axe or hammer?

    Disney disagrees.

Also, they prefer to be called little people. I'm a pretty short regular person, and I don't mind being called a midget. Not sure how I'd feel if I did have dwarfism, though. Guess I will never know.

And to the OP, they get offended because people like to find reasons to be offended. It's first world people's favorite past-time.

Haha, he cracks me up again rightaway but I actually ment the part when he tells about bringing a midget to the centre of the forest because that is where leprechauns live.

Hehe yeah he always cracks me up, one of the best comedians in the Netherlands I think. But Jiskefet is the absolute glorious number one at comedy. Brilliant how they imitate Toon Hermans for instance.

Oh my God, it's a freakin' joke people. Maybe because I'm a nerd and when I think dwarf, that's what I see.
If I were a midget, I'd totally rather people call me a dwarf than a midget or a little person. Those both just sound so boring. Lol.

a midge is a small, irritating fly. the suffix "et" means small as well. people tend to get offended when compared to animals because of a genetic or cultural difference. it implies that they are somehow less than human. moreover it harks back to the time when they would be part of freak-shows, ostracised and mocked.

but really, even if the term wasn't inherently offensive, they don't wanna be called it, so why call em it?.

but all this aside, dwarf does sound objectively cooler :afro:

Precisely. It's not for people who are privileged enough to not belong to a minority group of people that is regularly a target for ridicule, abuse, and sometimes ostracism, to tell people in that category what they should (or indeed, shouldn't) find offensive. To call someone something that you know they will find offensive is just being a douche. Especially over something so shallow as aesthetic reasons.
