It was at 06:10 this morning until about 6:40 in the Plymouth, UK area. A series of loud bangs spread out over about 5/10 minutes that sounded like thunder. The first was so loud it woke me. The skies were clear so i know it cant be thunder, there were no flashes or anything. My partner works night shifts about 30 seconds away from my house and they heard nothing. I dont live anywhere near a road or airport etc. I looked outside and saw nothing. It was so loud i felt my house shake. No one else where i live seems to have heard them either. Whats going on? EDIT: There were no fireworks or anything going off. They sound different to this.
I live a bit closer to the O.P. It was probably me with all the deviled eggs and the quart of milk chaser I had. It got a little windy around here after that.
I was installing my vise on my workbench about then and dropped it but I'm in the US. Couldn't have been that.
It probably were fireworks after all, considering the date. I have been hearing loud bangs and booms for over 2 days already. Mostly at night because it is officially not allowed to light fireworks before 31 dec here.
My father told me a story that was very similar to yours. basically, he was painting a house with his partner, at night. they heard a series of loud bangs. They went outside, and heard nothing. The neighbors did not wake up and call the cops, as my dad was sure the bangs would wake everyone up! My dads partner went in the basement and got really close to the radiator, and the bangs started just before he touched it! ( kinda funny, but not really...) they didn't go back at night, and they never went in the basement again.
It's groundworks at the Barbican in Plymouth. They are sealing a network of catacombs and require some explosive work which has been cleared for early morning before the traffic rush....local newspaper
