The first proper trailer is out, the teaser trailer didnt really give much away. I'm giddy and biased, I love all incarnations of Superman. And this movie now looks like it will be pretty awesome. Cavill has some cleft chin going on as Superman, but maybe too much receding hairline - this is what I focus on. Still another 6 months away, I havent been this excited about a movie since....well I dont want to jinx myself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVu3gS7iJu4"]Man of Steel - Official Trailer #2 [HD] - YouTube youtube.com/watch?v=KVu3gS7iJu4
Yeah I think this could be the best Superman movie ever, and one of the best comic book movies ever. It has Goyer as the writer, and he's great at re-imagining and rebooting comic book characters (see Batman Begins and Blade). What's more, this is going to be a different kind of Superman, a more modern Superman.
Is this the movie that was in the making when Smallville ended? I was hoping Tom Welling would do it.
If Tom was in it then it would tie this movie to the smallville series. This is a totally different take on Superman. I don't think Welling would make a good Superman anyway, he's a little too pretty and has a young boyish look.
Zack Snyder is what has me a little worried. He hit gold with 300, but his past three films have had mixed success. I think they took a real risk going with Snyder, and I really hope it pays off. Chris Nolan and Goyer wrote the story, so if the film sucks I know who I'm blaming...
I watched the trailer the other day. I looks really good. BUT, in my opinion, I for one think Brandon Routh should carry on as Superman in ANOTHER series that Christopher Reeve started way back in '78. I mean, in my opinion, Routh was AWESOME in Superman Returns. Plus, the Superman theme originally composed by John Williams became such a sonic icon when the first Superman with Christopher Reeve came out, that now it's a little hard to imagine the comic book character without also playing that theme music in our heads. The upcoming Man Of Steel doesn't have that theme music as part of the film. My initial reaction when I found that out, to be honest, was a big disappointment. But I also respect the new director's decision to keep this film separate from the Reeve/Routh versions. Kind of like what they did with Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire was great and Danny Elfman's music kicked ass, but I thought the new one with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, and its film score, were awesome, too. So, why not start this new Superman series with Henry Cavill as something totally new and different, but ALSO keep the whole Chistopher Reeve's legacy going by having another series developed with Brandon Routh as another Superman, with the iconic Superman Theme alive and kicking? It would be the best of both worlds in my opinion.
Yeah, i second or third the point about Routh Everything about this movie smells epic...except Cavill. Routh, even Tom Welling but you need a guy that looks like Superman. That all American, Quarterback look. Cavill just doesnt fit
I'm horrified that Zack Snyder's doing it because he ruined Watchmen horribly. I mean, it probably was an unfilmable story; but still. However, he has a great cinematographer with him on this, and Christopher Nolan is most always good. But what really scares me is how dark Nolan and Snyder tend to be. I don't want Superman turned into Leonidas or a tragic figure. But both trailers were amazing. Despite my hesitations; I'm more excited than I've been for any comic movie besides the Dark Knight (Begins is still better.) And I'm already seeing S-shields everywhere =D
Seriously don't understand why Snyder's Watchmen adaptation isn't more highly regarded. The opening sequence is one of the best I've ever seen in film, the whole soundtrack was excellent really, he actually improved on the ending and the combat sequences were refreshingly original albiet a lot different from the novel. The only thing I can fault it on is it's depiction of Rorschach. I was frustrated that the dialogue was changed so that his action appeared less morally ambiguous. Still, the novel was as you said, considered unfilmable. The adaptation definitely impressed me, especially after being so horribly horribly dissapointed with the film adaptation of Wanted, what a fucking piece of shit. ANYWAY, back to topic, I think it has the ingredients to be a great new and original adaptation much like the many different adaptations of Batman. I expect nothing short of excellence as far as the combat sequences are concerned. Nolan and Goyer writing the thing came as a bit of a relief I have to say after seeing Snyder's attempt at that (Sucker Punch). I'm not sure about it being too 'dark' or whatever. Superman was sort of badass in the 1930s "In the original Siegel and Shuster stories, Superman's personality is rough and aggressive. The character was seen stepping in to attack and terrorize wife beaters, profiteers, a lynch mob, and gangsters, with rather rough edges and a looser moral code than audiences may be used to today.[40] Later writers have softened the character and instilled a sense of idealism and moral code of conduct. Although not as cold-blooded as the early Batman, the Superman featured in the comics of the 1930s is unconcerned about the harm his strength may cause, tossing villainous characters in such a manner that fatalities would presumably occur, although these were seldom shown explicitly on the page. This came to an end late in 1940 when new editor Whitney Ellsworth instituted a code of conduct for his characters to follow, banning Superman from ever killing" - Wiki it's going to be interesting nevertheless.
I disagree with that, Caville has a more masculine, mature face. Tom Welling looks too pretty, and he will always have that young boys face. Routh looked great, but he has a more old school superman look to him, which is what they were going for to try and duck tail off of Reeve's Superman. Caville is much more manly, he even has chest hair in the trailer. Reeve is still the best imo.
In the graphic novel, Veiss uses a giant squid to trick the world into thinking aliens are attacking and he creates peace that way. Snyder changed that to Veiss setting up Dr. Manhattan as the bad guy, which is more inline with the story and a little more intelligent. And it worked so well because it tied into events that already happened in the movie. Such as Veiss blocking Manhattan's ability to see the future, setting up Manhattan on the talk show to make him look unstable. It actually works a lot better than in the graphic novel.
