Yeah I mean the people enslaved by debt and the prospect of getting the newest shiny toy. Kids are the purest form of human around. Without outside influence from today's society a kid would not see the world as a horrible place of robbery and death, etc. When a human becomes corrupted and trapped it's usually a direct result of "Obey, listen, repeat, get graded, repeat." and that's when it begins.
Perhaps, I am not even certain of that unfortunately But besides that, do you think a chicken in a pen or even more sad, one in a battery cage is not aware it isn't free at all? If there gets a hole in the pen or the door is left open they sure know their way out in my experience. Well, perhaps the ones in the battery cages don't know any better and got no clue what a free chicken lives like but I am convinced it feels pretty damn unfree too.
You are free when there is no need or desire for more. The cat sitting in the window looking at the stray outside may be thinking that he has more freedom, the warmth of a house, love of a human, food and water, but the stray looking at the cat in the window may think he has more freedom, able to go wherever whenever, choose what he eats, choose which humans he will let near him. Its perspective.
having the illusion of freedom is not the same as having freedom. or maybe it is, and the US really is the freest country in the world...
People put themselves into all kinds of uncomfortably small boxes. Social, political, religious, philosophical, financial, professional... We are born with a natural Zen-like ability to live in the moment, but we learn to replace that with unhealthy attachments.
Yes, just because humans have the power to create these boxes to define their situation does not mean other animals aren't subject to the same struggles. It is true they don't have to get to work in time or plan hours for study to pass an exam but they do fill their time with the basic struggle to have a relatively good living. The only thing that is generally stopping them from choosing not to do so and quit that stuff is their instinct.
I think it's really all animals, but the cause of that is something humans have done. We have so many abstractions between us and nature, when we really aren't separate at all. I think when most humans use the word "nature," they mean a pretty view, or some animals they saw on the Discovery Channel. Most of our societies seem to me like their whole purpose is to "elevate" humans "above" animals in some way. So, humans end up forgetting that we're all really a part of the same thing, and that makes it a lot easier to mess up ecosystems, create factory farms, completely screw up the oceans...all in the name of profit, which is really just another made-up abstraction. In some ways, we've caged all the animals on Earth, even ourselves.
this thread is one big facepalm, i knew someone would say humans...holy shit a human can of his own free will (depending on his country unfortunately) hop on a plane and go to most places in the world. oh poor humans have no freedom. and the other main one mentioned is the chicken in the pen. but any animal in a pen would not have much freedom. go down to the corner of parksley and 13 on the eastern shore of virginia, every time i pass there i see chickens walking around scratching on the grass of the royal farms gas station and a couple times i even saw them in the street stopping traffic. they hardly seemed unfree to me. and also i own a chicken, and let me tell you something. it wants little more than to be in its pen with food. when i put her in the yard to run around she dosnt walk any further than....maybe 3 feet away. which is about the size of her pen. i think the real issue is that they are being used as food but that is a different thread. because if being in a pen was enough to make it the most unfree animal then humans would be ahead of them anyway being there has been (and still is in a few cases) slavery which i bet the people getting whipped for not working would be happy to just sit in a cage and get food. bulldog is a good one but how did the first bulldog get born if it can have sex without humans, i really doubt that people a few hundred years ago where grabbing a bulldogs penis and putting it into another bulldogs vagina. even if i am wrong on that one i still say its..... the hermit crab. poor fellow has to have his next shell ready to go or he will die from having his shell be to small. i bet some spend there whole life just walking around looking for a shell to live in. and then it dosnt even have the freedom to leave its shell for any extended period of time.
I agree a pen is not the worst 'imprisonment'. But I think the ones in the battery cages are still in the race. They lead horrible lifes and have barely space enough to move around.
The OLD English Bulldog was a lot different than the Modern English Bulldog. They were tall, fast, athletic, good health, etc. when the blood sport of bullbaiting was banned, breeders thought it would be cute to start breeding their bulldogs to be short and fat. Over time, they slowly became what we know today as the English Bulldog. They are unnatural. They can't give birth naturally either....they have to have a C section because their heads are so large compared to their body.
If I walk down the street naked and wiggle my nuts I will get arrested. Any other animal can do that without getting arrested. Now who has freedom?
You can do it in a lot of places if you like to do that outside. Unless you'd like to do it around other people for shock value Well, you still have that freedom too, except there are chances on certain consequences like arrest indeed. It doesn't kill you generally though so it is still your own calculated choice.
pensfan has the ultimate homebody chicken. no, they don't normally go super far from home, but in my experience they do tend to cover a few acres with their wandering. neither can this guy, but that doesn't mean he's not free. if a gorilla was walking down the street here, it might not be arrested but it would certainly be detained. and this would be the case even if it were clothed.
most of the people on this thread make good points, and this is one. but it is only one example. i will give just one example also, most animals that decide to bite a human will likely be killed by that person or put to sleep by the aspca. but if a human bites any other animal then they most likely get a fine. in extreme cases maybe a few days in jail. you want freedom to wiggle your nuts i want freedom to bite things indiscriminately. im sticking with the hermit crab, whos choice is death or confinement to a proper fitting shell.
