I mentally embrace the piano more than almost anything in the entire world. I played the clarinet also and you don't really embrace that...
hammer dulcimer i put a picture up but it was way too big and i'm not sure how to resize so here's a link http://i622.photobucket.com/albums/...tyahoo/HandMadeHammerDulcimer036ofsoman-3.jpg
also would anyone count the violin? you hold it right up to your chin and shoulder but thats not neccessarily an embrace and most of the instrument is pointed away from your body
Violin I think of as very intimate. It's like holding a person cheek to cheek, even though not like hugging. Violin itself is an expressive sounding instrument, like a human voice.

uhh.. there's a really vague difference.. maybe you could explain how you personally differentiate the two?
As a side note, I've wondered why it's called a drummer. Drummist seems better. Percussionist, clarinetist, and so on. I don't hear words such as percussioner, clarinetter. Regarding percussionists vs drummers, I think percussionists are more general. They can play scale-tone percussive instruments that are struck by hand or with a hand-held instrument. Marimba is an example. Drummer usually refers to someone who plays only drum-like instruments.
Speaking of drumming percussionists, when John Lennon was asked if Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the world, guess what he said? (I think I posted this somewhere else once.)
Ringo wasn't great technically on the drums, but he knew the spirit and groove of songs written by someone else.
i prefer drummer over 'percussionist', everyone i know uses drummer. piano can be a very close personal instrument, i think. my wife plays it very strange HEAVY and full of energy. i make fun of her and say she's always trying to kill the piano.....
