If you feed a high-quality food, the bag price is more expensive but usually they end up needing smaller servings because the food is nutritionally complete and filling with quality ingredients. No empty calories like corn or wheat. It'll also keep kitty healthier and that means less vet visits. I even did the math about found that we save money on litter because we feed better food; he doesn't poop a lot, and when he does they are small and they don't smell at all. It's honestly amazing how much impact there is in just giving them a more biologically appropriate food.
Best decision you will make for your buddy! Check out catinfo.org. It was created by a veterinarian that focuses on feline nutrition and gives a ton of awesome information and feeding guidelines. Before moving in with my current housemates with their cat, my own was on a diet of raw meat, raw organs, and raw bones. It is absolutely the healthiest he has ever been and as soon as we are gone and living alone again we are putting him back on it. The difference, even from a really good quality kibble and/or wet food, is absolutely amazing. The community of raw pet food advocates gets a lot of shit from the veterinarian community and this is for various reasons: vets are very often paid by companies to endorse their kibbles (the worst food, Hills Science Diet, is the most notorious for this and usually nutrition classes in vet schools are spearheaded by representatives from major pet food companies such as Hills and Nestle (which makes Purina and a few others); also, many people new to raw think they can just feed chicken wings and steak and that will be good enough, so their animals suffer and become malnourished and can even die(cats especially due to their inability to create a vital nutrient, taurine, which they will die without but is found in good quantities within organs and can also be bought as a supplement at health stores). There are a LOT of raw feeders who have been feeding their opportunistic (dogs) and obligate (cats, ferrets) carnivores this way for decades and all they have to show for it is pets that very rarely go to the vet and have significantly longer lifespans, increased energy well into their senior years, and amazing immune systems! If you would rather just feed kibble though, a few of the best brands are Orijen, Blue Buffalo, NOW Fresh, Fromm, Merrick, Holistic Blend, and Wellness. However if price is an issue, Walmart have recently begun selling a very healthy, high-quality holistic store brand called Actr1um (there is a one in the name, yes) and my own boy did very well on it. Sorry for typing a novel but I hope I've been of some help!
You've definitely been a lot of help! Thanks for that. I do want to put my cat on a better diet. She's getting old, and she's very heavy! I want her to live as long as possible haha. I have wanted to try out the Blue kind.
Glad to do so! Dogs are really my main area but Rockefeller is the first animal I've owned on my own that I have been completely solely responsible for, though I grew up rescuing stray and feral dogs and cats as well as rehabilitating wildlife and living with hundreds of other animals. But I have had to push my obsession with dogs back a bit to really learn about feline health, behaviour, body language, psychology, and of course as you see, nutrition. And helping others is also still a form of learning for me as well.
