Hi, I've been growing my dreads for about a year, mainly neglecting but I've twisted and ripped some bits. They are still mainly unformed but the problem is the majority of my dreads are huge and flat from where I sleep, some are also starting to connect and mat together, does anyway have any advice on how to prevent this getting worse? :afro:

Hi, I have waist-length dreads, so lots of experience with dreadlocks. Nothing you can do about flat locs; some will be. Love them for who they are. Oh, you can palm roll them; it might help a little bit. As far as your locs connecting together, you have to rip them apart (frankly, I sometimes have to resort to clipping a bit to separate mats). Then either make sure they don't re-congo or put a bead on the dreadlock to keep it separate. Another option is x-wrapping a loc (with hemp twine or cotton embroidery floss).

The problem is my dreads aren't properly formed so it's like a mess of straight hair, flat messy dreads and a few nice ones.

You did neglect, what did you expect...? Love how they naturally turned out. And a eyar is still young for neglect anyways. :)

well I'm not an expert but have some knowledge on the topic since I'm going the freeform path myself. I've read that young mature dreadlocks (takes about a year) look pretty wild when they're young, all in weird shapes, loops, and what not... but over time in the year or two after (2-3 years after starting), they start to change a lot and become fuller and more matured

Yea dude, embrace the flatties and just try and divide anything that's too huge.

Some people rip things apart, but I usually just get in there with my fingers and try and separate things a little more gently... it depends on how matted things really are.

Is the mess of straight hair on the top part of your head and with things knotting more on the back part? That's usually how it goes when you don't comb.

    A photo would be rad.

Next to loopies, flatties are my 2nd favourite. They feel so nice!

When going neglect you're going to get a whole load of different forms of dreads. Loads of loose hair... but that's what it's all about!

Most of my flat dreads are a result of rectangular sectioning. There's really not much you can do.
