In England we are having a referendum (if David C is re-elected next election) to decide whether we will stay a part of the EU. I hope we do stay a part of it, I cant see it being a good thing if we don't..

That was my experience with Montreal, Quebec.

You could easily spend a whole summer doing that. :sunny:

No drastic cultural differences between different COUNTRIES of Europe.

(based on different Europeans he's talked to).

I don't really like European music, at least what I've heard. I think the United States has everyone beat on that (historically...definitely not talking about new pop music), followed by Britian. America has, once again historically, a very good music culture.

Europe has a much better sense of history. There are only a few US cities that have any significant historical value.

I went to a relatively large school (2000 people) and everyone was stereotyped and lumped into a group, but no one really let it completely define them either. The "popular" group was actually quite huge, not a lot of snobbery or staying in a small clique, and most of them were basically smart, good kids. They weren't really mean and they socialized with people from other groups all the time.

There is truth in it but its exagerated.

most movies and sitcoms are going to be like that, a hyperbole of real life.

there is a hot air balloon show in my town every year. Its pretty awesome - last year a balloon landed right across the street from my house.

It seems like this thread turned into a discussion about the state to state difference in the U.S. and the state to state differences in Europe.

I'd say a big difference that occurred to me while reading this thread was the difference in attitude towards work/labor and travel, and how they intertwine.

The U.S. has this stupid protestant work ethic thing going on. We're ashamed to take vacations. Which means no travel. Which means no exposure to other cultures.

They both tend to think they're the center of the earth. But if you look at a map, it's actually in the congo.

In France you don't say how much you earn, never, and people who make much money rarely bring it up with others who don't earn as much, as it's considered really impropered (you won't talk about your vacations in tahiti with peoples who could never afford it for example). You cannot be say you're proud of the money you earn in general. The attitude toward success (in work I mean) is different from the US from what I heard/read.

public transportation and the quality of it makes the real difference. trains created civilization, the automobile destroyed it. there is no such thing as a civilized country without adiquite public transportation, hence, america, for all its vaunted gains and advantages in other contexts, is at best rather crude and barbaric.

Hey, this is Europe. We took it from nobody; we won it from the bare soil that the ice left. The bones of our ancestors, and the stones of their works, are everywhere. Our liberties were won in wars and revolutions so terrible that we do not fear our governors: they fear us. Our children giggle and eat ice-cream in the palaces of past rulers. We snap our fingers at kings. When we have built up tyrants, we have brought them down.
