Sorry for the crazy thread title, I didn't know exactly how to word it. Anyway, first off, some background information. I'm a sophomore in high school, and have a few questions regarding community college coursework. Our school is on block scheduling, and I am enrolled to start Spanish I when winter break is over. However, next year, I'm going to have a load of courses on my back - AP Calc and Advanced Journalism (I'll be an editor next year, and exec editor my senior year! Actually, I'd be an ed this year, if I wasn't so stupid and decided to take AP European History and Honors Physics II instead of AJS), which are both yearlong courses, which, on the block, makes them two credits each. Of course, I also have the whole AP Chemistry/Humanities/Other required B.S. thing goin' on, too. Needless to say, I won't be able to fit Spanish III in, and definately not Spanish II. What I was going to do last year, though, was take my foreign language credits at the local community college, and would be able to take "beginning spanish II" (AKA "Spanish II") over the summer, int. spanish I in the fall, and int. Spanish II in the spring of next year, one night a week for 3 hours. Sounds like the perfect plan, right? I'd have four years of Spanish by the end of my junior year. However, there's a problem. I'm not asking for H.S. credit for the courses. In fact, I don't want it - even if I get A's, it'll bring down my GPA (now, I'm not exactly a GPA monger, and if I am I'm denying it, but hold on). I just want 4 years of Spanish for college purposes. So what's the problem, you say? Well, Each year is only 3.00 hours, which is roughly equivalent to 0.5 credits. So basically, even if I have four YEARS of Spanish, techincally I only have 2.5 credits. And basically all the colleges I'll probably end up applying to require 2 credits, but would prefer 3 to 4. So where does that leave me? I know nobody here's exactly a guidance counselor or anything, but do you think the admissions officers at any college would care more about the fact that i had four years, or that it was 2.5 credits? There's some other spanish elective courses at the CC that I could take that would bring me to 4 credits, but it would seem kind of pointless to do that just for more credit. And it would be so much unnecessary work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I don't understand how you're getting to four years. You're taking beg span 1 in HS, then beg span 2 and int span 1 & 2 at CC. So that's four semesters, or two years. Most colleges require two years of a foriegn language. I suppose the better ones may require more, but i never went to any of those. If the colleges you're looking at want more than two years than you'll need to take more. It may be better to do that by taking two different languages. I'm confused by the "credits" you talk about - why is a class in high school worth twice the credits as a class at the CC? My suggestion (you should be able to so this through the HS guidance counselor) is to contact the colleges you're interested in and find out both their requirements and preferences.
Well, the requirements for the the int. spanish II class is 3 years of HS spanish, so basically, all the information that is learned over the course of all 4 classes is equal to all the information I would have learned if I took all 4 years at HS. I think I'm just going to take in HS, though.
