Dear stoners, this is a fantastic discovery for me.. Last night while my friend was rinsing his bong, I glanced over at a bottle of tea tree oil that was on the counter. I knew that tea-tree oil is a very effective - anti-bacterial essential oil; I suggested that maybe it will destroy some of the bacteria present in his old, especially NASTY mini-bong. (This guy leaves water in his bong with no cover on the floor for months.. One time my friend and I opted to smoke a bowl out of this thing at the peak of it's nastiness, and the result was that we gaged and nearly puked it was so horrible. da FUCK man!!) If you have a glass piece that could use a bright and clean new year, look no further than essential tea tree oil! This stuff DESTROYS caked on resin faster and far easier than rubbing alcohol, purple powder or anything else I've used on the market. I just re-tested this at home with my large glass-on glass bong and it helped clean places in the bong's percs that I couldn't get at before -even more than with high % iso. rubbing alcohol! It's also one of my favourite multi-use oils, and has many benefits and uses worth looking into! :2thumbsup:
iso and salt, man.... shake the shit out of it, it will be clean in seconds. It's highly unlikely that there's anything alive in a dirty bong.... but it's pretty disgusting, and hits like shit. I've used bong water for days, even weeks, but I don't understand people smoking through a bowl of fucking nasty sludge.
I`m just saying that it`s far more effective than iso and salt. Added to the iso and salt, though, tea-tree would become a insta clean with minimal shaking. It`s useful if you happen to have some laying around; and as this is a hippie forum, I imagined lots would have that laying around somewhere. Just trying to spread the good word, because the cleaning solutions are far more expensive for the quality of the clean
I don't know why, but I never clean my bowls or bongs with anything. Well, I haven't had a bong in years, but usually if my bowl is dirty I just scrape the res out with a bobby pin. It works!
yea don't they sell tea tree oil by the 1 oz vile? i use sooo much alcohol on my bong.. i don't even want to think about how much it would take and cost to clean it with tea tree oil (10 bucks a fl oz?? Holy FACK!) OP is a tea tree oil sales person, if you want the result of my deducing.
Right? Only problem with salt is it does minutely scratch the piece. But for a daily driver, and one you like to keep clean, I think it's okay, and outweighs the massive inconvenience of letting it sit overnight or something. Running hot water through a bong for a few minutes can also really help, without all the trouble and waste of properly cleaning it. It softens the oils, and takes out all the heavy stuff, or strong smelling stuff.
I'm gonna give this a shot. My piece seems to almost take half a freakn' bottle of iso just to get the right spots, and I have tons of tee tree. The only thing I am skeptical about is the tee tree smell sticking around. It can be a little overpowering.
Just tried this. It works but I'd say it's on par with iso, for my piece. I like that I can sorta see the density of the oil, so you can mix it with water to get to the tough spots and swish appropriately. I won't be toking until tonight, so we'll see then if there's much residual smell. (ed.) Also, it didn't take a lot of oil . Maybe a teaspoon?
how tiny of a pipe are you cleaning with a teaspoon of solvent+water? and how much are you watering it down?
It's not tiny. I usually put about a cup and a quarter of water in the water chamber to toke. It's a nice size with percs in it. This is a piece that I usually have to use maybe a third to half a bottle of iso to clean, or more. With today's pseudo-experiment, I started with no water and just dropping the oil down some of the orfaces. Like iso, the drops make the resin run when it hits. Then I started to slowly add water and swish. Added a few more drops of tee tree as the volume of water increased. I was at about a cup of water to the teaspoonish of oil by the end of it. (next time I'll be sure to measure the oil better, I'm just guessing based on a rough conversion of drops to tsp) After the I rinsed the oil and crud out, I swished with a cap of iso to clear the tea tree out. The lack of solubility of the oil seems to be the big advantage here. As the water level rises, the oil level rises and hits a new part of the bong. I will be trying this again.
