Does anyone with mature locks, know approx what age your dreads are until you can stop ripping the roots apart? my get really stuck (i leave them for about a week, at least 3 days) and its starting to get really painful ripping.. or do you rip forever? i have no idea lol..

They are 20 weeks old :)

You have to rip forever, just not so much when they get mature. When locks are young they are soft and stick to each other more easily. Also at the start locks often have a sort of web of hairs interlocking across the scalp and it's those hairs you have to keep ripping between the dreads. As the dreads grow out, that web of interlocking hairs gets lifted up off of the scalp with the dreads they're stuck to and then it's easier to rip them all apart.

I'm at 69/9 months I think and if I wanted to keep them separate I would still have to rip now. Not every day, but maybe once over week / 2 weeks or so. It's pretty easy to do because the dreads are so strong and tough compared to the hairs bonding the two together. But at this point I don't really care about them sticking anymore, couple of years ago I'd always be sat ripping when watching TV, I enjoyed doing it. Now I just let them grow together.

Thanks bubble:) the roots on mine have become really thick and are getting tougher, so its becoming easier, i think they become more stuck because i wear a hat almost everyday (usually wool) and it fuzzes them up like crazy..

I went to a heavy metal night at a club a few days ago, hat fell off and dreads were all over the place, some dude with 6 year old mature locks thought mine were at least 9 months, was a proud moment:)

I am going to pester my sister to get some good pics of them with her camera (same camera as the picture on the first post of this thread) so i can show the underneath 'maturest' locks!!!

I have to rip two of my congos apart, and I'm at nearly 4 years. Not a daily thing though, maybe once a month or something

I think some of my ends are going to naturally blunt themselves, seems in the past week or so a lot of the wispy bits have curled up on themselves and joined the matted bits.. also, my crazy curly loopy that I.was kinda updating has almost sucked itself in...

Heres the dude I was updating!! major changes, need a timeline just for this one lol

And, what seems like naturally blunting ends!

Theres about 5 like that, where the wispy ends have just kimd of disappeared and I am left with just a few strands!

Is it weird that I feel like that dread is like wanting to roll into a dread ball? It looks like its curling into itself haha. I love it.

I thought this too! I have had loads of dreams about my dreadlocks before and one of them was a dreadball that fell off lol...weird mind i have... another was that my fattest dread (a completely joined congo) broke off due to the weight, literally at the roots so i had a bald patch on top and so I glued it to my shortest dread at the nape of my neck lol

Love the choice of words and to MamaPeace, that is one crazy ass dream.

For some reason when you said bald patch I immediately thought of Pickles from Metalocalypse.

is there a way to help your fringe dread? I didn't do it in with the tnr when I started, but haven't touched it (brushing etc) and other than a tiny strand thats matted, the rest is still soft, non tangled and straight.. any tips? I don't usually wear a fringe and its becoming awkward clipping it back... looks like this (yes I was very drunk here, and spent most the night head banging and moshing lol)

I was thinking of maybe just tnr'ing it in quite small sections, then seeing what happens, and when/if they begin to dread I can then congo so its just 2 big dreads instead of like 5/6 small ones

When i made my first locks from twist n rip i did the hair right above my forehead and split them evenly with enough hair so they will be a good size, not too little either.

Well the 4 locks that sit above my eyes have been very slow at locking, they are not loose but its sllllllllllow.

My locks have all tightened fastest from the back towards the front...but if thats how you whole head will be dreaded make sure you have enough hair for a good dread and not a tiny little thing right above your eye...

That second picture at the top of the page is awesome.

Mine locked from the back to the front too. Once the front started they just ate themselves up. Started with like 4 or 5 and now theres like 2. I was kinda worried what they would look like once they did lock up cause they had stayed straight for so long. Turns out they just look like the other dreads ha.

I'm a back to front dreader too.. most of my back ones are dreaded from the top to just over halfway down then either loopy or beavertailed (loads of beavers!) the the front is dreaded about a quarter or so down then just crazy loopy and wrapping over on themselves/blunting..

decided to leave the fringe :)
