How do you deal with people telling you you're going to hell?

I'll smile in a way that makes them more angry.

And I'd reckon Highway to Hell might not be a bad one too....

 

As an Atheist, it's a meaningless empty threat. I can think of scenarios where getting told I'm going to hell could actually be a comforting relief:

Say I've been a bad boy and wronged someone and all I get for it is a "you'll get yours in hell".

I'd be like, "phew, I was afraid I was going to see some real consequences there but yeah, I'll take my punishment in an imaginary land. Sure thanks, this is great...".

Threats of hell don't bother me at all. Something that is however a slight annoyance, when I hear theists utter this line of pure bull crap, "ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE ME"... This is like the polar opposite of hearing you're going to hell. This is the theist dismissing his own wrong doings, it's like me saying "Only my imaginary friend can punish me". In this line of ignorant thought, the nature of God is more transparent than ever. God is a mental manifestation of the egocentric man, a subconscious coping mechanism so bad people can live with themselves and fool themselves into thinking they are good. Denial and dismissal of your worldly animal nature.

 

It's not a thread or condemnation at all guys. Your fellow human being does not send you to hell even if you would believe in all that. God is supposed to do that and his followers feel like stating it for different reasons. Perhaps even to save us

Well, don't ask me. I don't think God condemns anyone. I just think when some angry person shouts go to hell I can ignore them. If a concerned christian for whatever reason thinks he should tell me I don't follow the right path which will bring me to heaven I am sometimes willing to go into discussion. But at least I am aware they do not condemn me to hell themselves. If someone doesn't believe God handles things in such a way I don't see why it is often taken out on God, like he has to be an evil fucker and all that.

 

It is most often a threat. In the context of the mental illness that is religion, it is often also abuse and manipulation. Especially when children are involved.

 

I say I can't go somewhere that does not exist, so I probably won't be going to their heaven either.

 

If it's a woman, get on her ass about wearing make-up. Ask her what it's for if not to promote her sexuality for the purpose of luring a man regardless of her marriage status. Ask her what God thinks about women who seek to be coveted, thereby helping to facilitate the downfall of the poor married saps who can't help looking. If coveting thy neighbor's wife is bad, how bad is seeking to be coveted?

Ask her what it is about God's handy facial-work that she found lacking, and found need to remedy. Then ask her if she thinks she's absolutely certain that she knows the difference between God's voice and the devil's voice.

Well my mom tells them we're already in hell and this is the worst it's gonna get...

And i'd probably either tell them to fuck off or for THEM to go to hell.

when i watched these videos it completely changed my perspective. i believe everyone should be able to believe whatever they want, and its not wrong of them to want to 'save' you, even if you chose to believe they are wrong. i call myself post-theist

 

i generally shrug things like that off. how the fuck does this person know? if they're so certain, why are they bothering to put me down? i'm not special. leave me be. i just wanna have a good time.
