To me, there is a lot of corporate BS people have been duped into believing when it comes to health.

    Milk is good for you.
The flu shot will protect you from the flu
You should drink diet soda if you want to lose weight
Eggs will give you high cholesterol
    Cheerios are healthy for you
    GMO foods are perfectly safe
    All saturated fats are unhealthy
Sunscreen will protect you from skin cancer
Over 5,000 IU of vitamin D is too much
Vitamins are bad, but big pharma is good
If you want to reduce your cholesterol, have doctor put you on Lipitor regimen.

I never heard vitamins are bad haha. Is that the new thing over there? Also, I have wondered about the usefullness of sunscreen myself but not saw any good insights about why or why not it blocks stuff. If you have please share :)

Sunscreen might prevent you from getting sunburn, but it also blocks the natural health benefits of the sun, because sunscreen prevents the skin from synthesizing vitamin D (which helps prevent cancer) from the sun's rays. The best thing to do is simply not to stand in the sun too long. If you must stay in the sun for a prolonged period of time, then sunscreen might be necessary, but it's better to utilize shade as much as possible.

Yeah, and there are always studies coming out (often funded by big pharma) that says vitamins are either useless and unnecessary, or outright harmful.

The issue with vitamins is mostly about potential toxicity of mega-dosing and that multivitamins are next to useless.

Half of the stuff on that list is common sense and the other half are generalizations.

I don't think any of those are really lies, they are just kind of exaggerated by the media and advertisements.

You've become kind of obsessed with health and diet and food since you've lost weight.
It's like when new moms mostly talk about their babies.

The most insidious and costly health myth is that lives can be saved.

The worst ones are probably the milk and vitamins myths, because they're so gosh darn expensive. But I do not take vitamins and I drink soy milk.

    Pretty spot on list

My genetics professor was trying to convince us that GMO foods are wonderful and will save the world and it made me gag a little. Of course he also is in favor of genetically modifying our babies while still in the womb as well...

Food and nutrition science is relatively new, I'd be cautious about internalizing any supposedly modern health axioms. They will laugh at us in 100 years the way we laugh about the blood letting days.

My mother is 92 (soon to be 93 on 12/21/12) and she has a group of vitamins she takes every day. That is also the only thing she takes - no meds. So, I have seen first hand that vitamins do NOT harm. Every time I've broken a bone, it has healed in record time - and I take the calcium/magnesium and vit D during that time. I'm also finally getting enough sense to begin taking vitamins regularly.

I'm scared to death to take a flu shot, and my healthy mother does not take them either.

As far as the sun goes - I would just hate for the majority of people to use even a lick of common sense and stay out of the sun as much as possible in the extreme heat of the day. You do know that if you are really over weight that getting a dark tan makes you look skinnier?!? :p

well, one case doesn't necessarily prove anything. people have lived to be 93 smoking cigarettes every day too, but that doesn't prove that cigarettes do NOT harm.

not that i think vitamins do harm. i take them myself. i also have never heard outside of this thread and maybe a similar thread or two in the past that they do anything other than help.

Oh, everyone thinks they have big secrets when it comes to diet. Most parts of eating right aren't complicated.
