i've tried more than a few times to do yoga with my child(he's 3), but he just wants to wrestle and climb on me. maybe when he's a bit older it'll go over better. i'm starting to teach him yoga breathing. we each put a toy on our tummies and watch it rise and fall with our breath, but kids are natural tummy breathers anyways, so it's not like i'm teaching him anything new. i've also tried out some of the kids yoga videos with him; there are some pretty cool ones where the kids are all pretending to be animals and the poses are introduced in a very playful way; but he's just not ready yet. he does downward dog on his own though (very cute!) and has recently started doing headstands off of the sofa. i do yoga while he naps, if at all.
i dont have kids, but my younger sisters who 10 joins in occasionaly. She really like it for a physical work out, however i believe the earlier she starts the more pwerful and centering her sessions will become.
i have practiced yoga on and off for almost 12 years now. i did pre natal yoga all throughout my first pregnancy and now this second one as well. i started seriously practicing again when my son was about 3 and wanted him to join in. i can relate to the climbing and wrestling. he did not have the attention span, the focus or the interest. he is now almost 5, and i practice in front of him. he gets his own mat and will join in and drop out throughout my practice when he loses interest. but he asks lots of questions, so it is a wonderful oppurtunity to share with him about what yoga means to me personally.
