I'd have to say Johnny Marr of the late Smiths. He's extremely underrated. Not a lot of people have heard of him, but he really perfected a kind of non-showy style that influenced a lot of guitarists in today's "alternative" bands.

I'm going to go with Jeff Baxter of Steely Dan, because his solo's sounds so much easier to play than they actually are. One fantastic guitarist... and what I wouldn't do for that electric sitar on "do it again"

There are probably hundreds of amazing jazz guys out there that no one's heard of though.

Oh, I would never think to say that, but that's definitely true.

I was just going to say Bob Dylan :D But I like your answer better. :D

Bob Weir - the man gets no credit, but he is one of the most original and complex rythm guitarists ever recorded. While Jerry gets the lion share of the credit - anyone who has ever picked up a guitar knows that the things that Bobby does are very complex and difficult to duplicate.

His live version 'Real Love' (I think that's the name of the song) where it's just him on the accoustic guitar. Amazing stamina and flawless delivery.

I'll add Frank Marino to this list http://www.mahoganyrush.com/
Has good improvisation style and an awsome sound.

I think the fingertips of his fretting hand where chopped off in an industrial accident (if I remember correctly) and had them replaced with plastic tips.

    My list would include

Empuu Vuorinen - Nightwish - coz he is not given nearly as much credit as he should! Every1 focuses ( through no fault of their own) on Tarja, and Marco and leave poor Empuu out! He is an amazing guitarist!

Mike Einziger - Incubus - what that man can do with a guitar, man! Seeing him play with that guitar live was something else! Really cool stuff! :)

Matt Bellamy - Muse. Again, what that man can do with a guitar! Matt is surely a god in the making. I think i would be so bold as to say that he could be this generations Jimi Hendrix! Dont kill me if you disagree please! lol

    peace and love

Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets, mostly because i'm getting no response to my Meat Puppets thread which tells me that he's underrated.

Even though he may not be an extremly technically talented guitarist, id have to say brain molko from placebo. he uses some great effects which makes placebo sound that much more unique.
