'K so I've researched it on the net and found yes you can feed a dog a vegetarian diet.

Is there anybody on here who is actively doing this? How is it working out and what exactly do you feed your pet.

From the way I understand it,you substitute a small amount of veggie material and subtract an equivilant amount of the dog food and continue to do this until it's all veggie. I met someone that did this ,but it's been a long time so my memory may not right on this. Don't know how else it could be done, though. A person would have to know the dogs actual dietary needs to make sure all was well.

Sorry--you didn't ask me how it was done. Oh well.

Thanks scratcho. My pup has a low blood sugar problem that I have to take into consideration. I already make her food so hopefully it won't be too big of a deal to change to veg. In view of the massive beef recall I don't even want to give it to my dog anymore. ( i'm veg )

Yes as far as I understand you can feed a dog an entirely veggie diet...Cats no way though...They need meat or fish.

That is true. Cats are pure carnivores. Humans are natural omnivores, and have digestive systems that can naturally accomodate a vegetarian diet. A cat's digestive system cannot naturally accomodate a vegetarian diet, and therefore, to enforce an entirely vegetarian diet onto a cat is unnatural, and in my mind, unethical also. If vegans/vegetarians cannot face giving a cat a meat based diet (which is the ONLY natural diet for a cat) based on their own morals/principles, then they shouldn't have a cat in the first place, and get a vegetarian animal instead, like rabbits or ginuea pigs. Combatting animal cruelty by partaking in animal cruelty is a perverse premise, but those who force a vegetarian diet onto their cat/s are doing exactly that.

With dogs, it's more of a grey area, although I still think it's wrong for humans to enforce their own moralistic views onto their animals who have no concept of such moralistic views. But I think it is possible to feed a dog a vegtarian diet without it being unethical, as their digestive system is naturally omnivorous. Unlike a cat's, which is naturally carnivorous.

I saw large bags of vegan dog food being sold at a store once. Look for some at a vegan store or order it online or look for another store. Or search up recipes

That's the stuff made from vegans right?

It's healthy but has a smarmy self satisfied aftertaste. My dog didn't like it.

I think this is just plain wrong. The argument waxes between dogs are omnivores or carnivores. Vegetarian does not enter the picture. If you truly love your pet you should feed them what is best for THEM, not YOU.

This article says it would have to be done very carefully.

Wysong sells Vegan dry food, but it's dry food. I don't feed my pets dry at all any more. It even says right on this page, "It is not intended to be the only food you give your pet."

Royal Canin also sells veggie dog food
, but it's filled with rice and potatoes, foods I would never feed my own dog.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. After reading the articles I decided not to go veg. I'll keep feeding her homemade food WITH meat. :)

no,no,no digs are not vegetarians people! They have huge canine teeth for a reason!

have you ever seen the south park episode with the vegetarian dog?

it was pretty funny (or maybe it was Bob's burgers, anyone know for sure?)

Dogs, like humans, are omnivores. Humans have canine teeth too, but still lots of humans are vegetarians. I'm not saying I agree with people enforcing a vegetarian diet onto their dogs, but they are omnivores, not pure carnivores like cats are.

I think it is cruel to feed a dog a vegetarian diet. Dogs are carnivores. My dog eats raw meat. He is very active and healthy. He had extreme allergy issues with kibble so I switched him to a raw diet. He does not itch or cry at all! I'm a vegetarian, but I will not force my dog to be.

Don't force your own lifestyle onto an animal that doesn't understand the concept of lifestyle. Dogs have evolved eating meat. Don't mess with nature!

Making a dog eat vegetarian is animal abuse. Vegetarianism isn't intended for humans, much less dogs. Please.

Good for you Windy. I was going to state that I've seen dogs dragging home various animal carcasses but I have yet to see one drag home a head of lettuce.
