I have been thinking about sight for awhile now.. One of the thoughts that popped into my head is that what if we can only see 1 dimension but we fill in the other dimensions with memory or prior experiences. Look around your room with this thought and then tell me what you think.

Imagine that you have just landed on an alien planet.Look around and make use of the things around you as if for the first time...(Thought experiment.)

But how alien are we talking? is there no dirt, no water, no rocks, no plants, no life... My first move would be back on the spaceship then haha

I'm talking about imagining present day Earth is an alien planet,in order to try to see it afresh and see and realize the potential of all the great things we have here...

There would be an age of discovery before there is progress

I see what your saying but whose to say that the first humans don't have the "three dimensional" sight we have I would kill to do research on the eyes of Neanderthals

Another I just thought of is that perhaps shadows work with our vision in order to give something the dimensions you need to compute the remaining side of the unknown object hmm...

There is no dark side of the moon...In fact it's all dark...Didn't they teach you that at school?

But one side is illuminated and I can only use my imagination to put together what the other side looks like... I figure it looks similar all around but who really knows

you'll also have to account for the position of the light source.

I thought we saw things in three dimensions because we have two eyes at a certain distance apart.
It's if we lose (or never had) the sight in one eye - when our brains compensate.
That might have been the plot to an ok movie, though :D

Are you saying: we see in 1 dimension, but our brains perceive the world in three dimensions.
If so, then I imagine depth perception is one of the visual clues our brains use to add volume - as it were. I've read we use a 1/3rd of our brain to see, but we actually see only a tiny fraction of what is around us...relying on a multitude of 'tricks' to see the world as most of us do...so I imagine it is very complicated.
It's probably more interesting to study what people see when their vision/brains are impaired.
Ironically, some people can't 'see' the 3D effects in movies. I can't.
