Pit bulls can take a lot of physical restraint to train em in my brief run-ins with the breed. Smack the shit out of him (but don't beat him excessively for menial things, you don't want him to flinch when anything moves - this will make him nervous and prone to violent outbursts), push him down forcefully when he jumps up, if he keeps doing that shit push him down and roll him onto his back - belly up. Any time you get an animal on their back and make them expose their bellies, they are in a submissive position. Hold their neck (this is what alpha dogs do), tell him NO, and then let him be. I know dogs that if you tell them NO loud enough when they know they are doing something wrong, they will just flop over and show you their belly. This isn't them wanting their belly rubbed, it's them being submissive and saying 'sorry, you're the boss' Like others said, too, exercise him. Pits have tooonnsss of energy. And yes, I think hitting a dog is fine - just not in the face. Or excessively.
Any dog is going to feed off of your energy. My mother in law has a poodle and when we go over to her house, my wife starts in with the "heeeeyyyyyyy!!!!!" in this playful, high pitched voice and that really gets him going. They play catch with this ball and every time he brings it back to her, he humps her leg. He licks her hand like he's addicted to it..just on and on and on with the hand licking. Last week, her and her mom went to the grocery store and I was there alone with him. I was sitting down watching tv and he saw lying down and relaxing the whole time. It was like a totally different dog. I use to have a Presa Canario, which is a much larger breed than a pit and definitely a big time alpha dog and I he knew who was boss from the very first day I got him. If you are fearful of this dog, even a little bit, he's not going to take you seriously and he will continuine behaving in the same way. If he jumps on you, you give him a very stern no. If he doesn't listen, repeat it. Put his collar on him and control the situation. You can't request anything of a powerful breed, you have to demand it and expect that the dog will listen.
and contrary to what Mr. Mensa says above my first post, you do not and should not strike the dog in that way. You may have to push him off of you or block him from jumping on you with your arm, but hitting him is the last thing you want to do. This is about psychological dominance. Trust me, the dog will get it. I have dealt with several other powerful dogs and they all fell in line without me having to strike them. These are animals that are bread to fight other dogs so do you really think you can do something psysically to hurt this dog?
Well I spoke with the women and told her, she said the same thing, he isn't used to all this space. I've been holding his mouth if he tries to jump up on me, and pinning him to the ground and saying "No!" It's actually working pretty well, as he's already calm down a bit. I've been keeping his leash short and saying "Heel" when I tug him close to me. I'm hoping to teach him to walk with me.. will this method work?
I agree. Sometimes it is hard but try to catch him doing something good and praise the hell out of him for doing it (whatever is is) :2thumbsup:
To all the people talking crap about pitbulls, have you ever had one or seen a well trained pit. My pitbull is the biggest wimp. My ragdoll cat is more of the pitbull. He is always overly excited to see someone new. He has played with a 4lb mini poodle, and other types of puppies and he weighs 70 pounds. He had little boys playing with him the other month and I had them give commands to him and he actually somewhat listened and his whole jumpy excited attitude vanished and he sat down in front of them. They were pulling on him poking him and never once got snappy. He also got attacked my another dog. And while the other dog had him by the back of his neck shaking putting 10 puncture holes in it he never fought back or even let out a growl. Punish the deed not the breed. Back in the day before people used them for fighting. They were called a nanny dog. Don't buy into the media hype. If he plays with me and bites my hand instead of his toy he let's go and lays down and waits for me to say it's ok Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
What they are is a dominate breed. They like to push you and see what they can get away with. Especially males that are in tact. If you let them know who's boss they will be very eager to please you. Maybe sometimes he tries too much Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
Two 15 minute walks a day is so not enough for this dog. He needs way more exercise than that. I feel sorry for the dog. The owner does not deserve to have a dog if she only walks him once a day.
Alright thats it, I can bite my tongue no longer! Nanny dog my ass, "back in the day" Pit bulls were bred excusivly for fighting and killing, you fucking ignoramus.:biker: Exterminate the lot of them I say! Rottys, Mastifs, all that shit. http://greenheritagenews.com/is-there-proof-that-pitbulls-are-natural-killers/
The problem with statistics like that is the key words: "pitbull type dogs." People generally don't have a clue when it comes to identifying a breed. My dog Gracie Daze, pictured below, is a Mastiff. Which they don't have a place on your list of dangerous dogs btw. My family members and I breed and raise BullMastiffs, they don't have the traits that you are afraid of. However, due to the ignorance of the general public, Grace is regularly identified as a pit bull. And so does a lot of strong breeds. Because of the stigma behind the breed, many people will call any strong scary looking dog a pit. And so the statistics will never be accurate. I won't argue the fact that many pit bulls are EXTREEMLY dangerous, and that a lot of them have no place in a civil society. But this is not the fault of the breed, but of the owners and breeders. As a breeder myself, I know the importance of selective breeding, choosing only the best animals to further the awesomeness of the breed. The people who breed for aggressiveness and pure quantity are the ones that should be shut down. They are the criminals who are putting dangerous animals into the streets. If you were to buy any ofthe pit bull breeds from a respectable breeder with a long pedigree then it is very unlikely that your dog will be violent. That is unless you are a horrible dog owner yourself.
For one I'm not a biker, or gangster or whatever else you want to try labeling pitbull owners as. And at least I'm not a biased asshole who believes every thing they read. My dog is purebred blue nose pit. I have his family tree that goes back generations. His mom and dad are ukc champions. These dogs turn bad from bad owners that don't know how to raise them, or abuse them. My 70lb pit plays with my 11lb cat. She claws the he'll out of him and he takes it. Also after he got attacked by another dog the next day he was playing with 2 husky puppies that were biting at his face and he never once went after them in an aggressive manner. I have never heard my dog growl in anger. And these killers you speak of when people had them fighting opposite owners would handle the dogs if the dog ever showed aggression to the person they would shoot it to get rid of the bad blood. I know me telling you facts isn't going to do shit because you are set in your way. You believe what everyone tells you. Honestly I wasn't a big pitbull fan till I met my friends and I took my dog off his hands cause he was living in his car because of his dogs. You can train any dog to be vicious, and yes they are powerful dogs. When I play with a rope or toy with my dog if he accidentally hits flesh he backs right off and lays down and waits for my approval.
