Remember when TV shows didn't recap the previous episode at the start of each new one. And when they didn't feel the need to recap what happened before the ad break. It drives me crazy. Please tell me I'm not alone in hating this and thinking it makes us lazier?
No, actually. It's always been there, just mostly in the soaps. As late night drama began taking on more of an over arching soapish plot trend, it also brought with it the re-cap.
Recaps are necessary! You expect me to remember what happened 1 whole week ago? Not with the amount of drugs I've been smokin!
I do not watch television, but I do download episodes of shows to watch. Since they can edit out the commercials, one would think they could also edit out the recap.
They don't do that in the soaps here. Did you mean soaps, or did you mean in say current affairs programmes etc?
shows that have multi-episode storylines have been doing that since before i was born. shows that don't have multi-episode storylines still don't do that (at least not the ones i watch).
I remember that Batman always started with a recap. I think that Hill Street Blues was one of the first shows to have an extended, developing, multi-episode back story.
Never mind the recaps - in the 80s there was this absurd craze for showing you, in the opening title sequence, a series of clips of what you were going to see later in the show. It kinda irritated the hell outa me ...
