I went from 496mb to 752mb kinda lame, right? but i have a question.. I had 2x256 sticks in there and it only registered as 496mb, and i took one of those out and replaced it with a 512 stick.. shouldnt I have had 512mb and then upgraded to 768? What gives? does my 256 stick have a dead sectors or something? I may try switching out the 256 sticks and see if the numbers change...
Your system probably uses some of that system RAM as video RAM if you don't have a dedicated video card.
Try resetting your CMOS/BIOS... Should be a jumper on the Motherboard that gets moved or removed and then put back as it was, if not then pull the battery. You will have to reset the time. date and all that stuff, but it could be the motherboard needs to be forced into seeing the new ram. Do you know the maximum RAM the mobo supports?
2 slots of ddr so i think 4gig. every time i start the computer a "cmos battery failure has occured, press enter to continue". there is never any resetting of the time, though.
Not necessarily, what motherboard is this? (or system if it's pre-built) Try to find a manual online so we can get some specs. What date does your system think it is, 2001? We should sort that out too, why is it saying the battery has failed?
e machines t 3504 with win xp pro SP3 the date is correct i'm pretty sure i replaced the battery once, but it still said failed cmos battery.. there seems to be no symptoms other than having to press enter every start up.. I usually just leave it on standby anyway
Okay... First of all, that system is 2GB max for your RAM. Even though you have a PCIe video card your BIOS settings may not be stopping the motherboard from setting some RAM aside if it is still enabled. See if there are any settings in the BIOS that turn that off. While you are in there check date and time as it may be wrong and XP corrects it when it loads. Here's the support page... eMachines t3504 but it's only showing drivers, I haven't found the manual. It does say there is a user guide on your hard drive when shipped. If you haven't formatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP it could be listed as " eMachines System or eMachines Documentation" under All Programs in the start menu...
the options it gave me in BIOS was only to switch between onboard video, PCI, PCIe, or Auto. I switched it from "auto" to "PCIe" but there is no change. also, my PC's clock is consistently 8 minutes behind, but I'm about to set that and see what happens with it. it said that time in the BIOS clock, but I was just restarting, it hadn't been off for any extended period of time, as to discharge the battery. maybe when I switched out the battery i switched it out for a bad battery. I will try to put a new one in there again. . I got a different version of windows than it came with, and a bunch of different hardware than the system came with..
Maybe some other site can come up with a manual, but watch out for scammer sites... If you're comfortable with making BIOS changes I guess there's no need... Still it would be nice to find out why the memory deal isn't right. Have you shut down and rebooted since the change from Auto to PCIe? or just rebooted... That sometimes makes a difference.
meh, it's only 16mb. i'm more annoyed by the battery failure lol. but yeah, I'm a+ certified and shit.
