(I asked this in the tv section, but I don't know if that was the appropriate place. I guess it's more of a random thought.) In example, the Star Trek episode The Omega Glory that makes a social commentary on the ignorance regarding the Constitution. Micheal Kammen utilized that episode to explain the mindlessness with which Americans "worship" the Constitution. Any other ideas? Just anything that alludes to some deeper meaning.
Star trek is full of moral and social commentary. I have always liked that (although haven't watched an episode in at least 2 years).
Americans worship the Constitution? I thought more Americans worship American Idol and the Kardashians? Perhaps if people did worship the Constitution, we would still have one.
I vaguely remember that star trek episode from its syndicated run back in the 1980s and thought at the time, how ridiculous and corny it was having the barbarians read the preamble Hotwater
I don't mean literally worship, hence the quotations. Thanks Asmodean, haha I mean those who blindly follow the Constitution without knowing what it's all about. Following it or "worshiping" it, just because it is deemed a significant document, not even knowing what it encompasses or comprehending it. If I were to say, Americans worship the idiotic blunders and lives of others broadcast to their homes, I wouldn't put quotations. Due to the fact that some individuals actually do worship and are absorbed in those franchises. (I say franchises rather than shows, due to the fact they all usually have some sort of product that can be exploited. Kim K perfume, American Idol video games, etc.)
I will admit, it is quite corny. Though the reason behind the barbarians reading the preamble (or rather Captain Kirk reading it for them), was to communicate that the "sacred document" was not just for the elite (or chiefs), it was for all to understand and appreciate. Star Trek isn't my favorite thing, but it's not too bad, especially when there is something more than campy corniness. I just listed an example, in hopes of getting similar suggestions.
I will admit those 90's star trek series are among my favourite tv shows Have to say I never followed the original series. I grew up with The next generation and Voyager which also were full of moral and social commentary. Also not totally absent of corniness but it seems less apparent overall there.
Star Trek is the only show i'll bother to watch anymore. i was raised on the original series but didn't really fall in love with it till Next Generation. there's only about 10 episodes for TOS that are really great.
