One more thing, FYI, there is a consensus among social historians that the US Sexual Revolution didn't end until the AIDS/HIV panic ended it, around 1985-86. It started when oral contraceptives became widely available, a few years after initial FDA approval in 1960. A lot more progress was made in some parts of the country than others, during that 25-year golden era. Some of the battles are still going on, and the current trend is against personal freedom.

Would you believe that some states still have anti-sodomy laws on the books? They can't be enforced because they have been struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, but I guess some right-wingers are hoping that the ruling will be overturned someday, and the states can resume enforcement. Of course, the laws were intended primarily to punish gay men.

I'm not convinced that the culture wars will ever end.

 

But real war will go one, unabated, thanks to the culture wars that see both parties win or lose based on cultural identity, while the candidates are free to engage in whatever violent war mongering they like, so long as they throw cultural crumbs to their voters.

That's how the last administration kept its base, by playing to their homophobia they were given a free hand in war. And the current one plays on fears of those ominous theocrats and their sex-phobia, as a way of getting a free hand to play the same war games.

I do think the culture wars could go either way but right now they're at an end. There's no chance of abortion ever being banned, despite the redefinitions and funding policies. Everybody is pseudo gay (metro), everybody is into porn (enough not to freak out about it). they just don't say it openly. And I mean EVERYBODY. Even church goers are porn watchers and there is porn that is marketed as relevant to them and their beliefs. Now that you can click a link, it's impossible to avoid temptation. When it was 'in that evil video store', of course you could avoid it, because it took effort to be curious.

That's why this latest election isn't about the queen versus the tough guy. Both are pompous tough war guys who act fey and hip in their domestic life. I think all that remains is sexual insecurity about our number of conquests, the positions we've tried, our sex appeal, not about our identity as moral/amoral, gay/straight.

Except for the drug culture wars, which once were part and parcel with sex experimentation. Now it's a bipartisan war on drugs at the federal level, while at the state and local level decriminalization spreads like wildfire. So that's an interesting twist in the culture wars that has nothing to do with left versus right.

 

Hell I'll agree with that! In fact I'll take it one step further and say that whole HIV thing was blown way out of proportion in order to stop the sexual revolution.

If you look at the actual statistics of HIV infection from unprotected sex you'll find that there's a greater risk crossing the street. In fact it's disgustingly below 1%. As for the AIDS part, it's still just a syndrome on the books. As such there's still multiple possible causes of it, HIV being only one of them.
