So it has been a week since I started my dreads via the twist and rip method. Any ideas on upkeep? I refuse to go to a salon and would like to hear other peoples methods. My hair was already fairly long when I started it actually. I also refuse to put rubber bands in my hair. I have been using California baby shampoo which I absolutely love. Oh, I don't know if this is relevant but I have a dread hawk so I don't have as much hair and my bangs are straight. I have a bunch of loose hairs and I refuse to crochet them too. Am I being too picky? Sorry for seeming really scatterbrained, it has been a long day for me.
It seems as though your on the right track. You already know what to avoid so keep it up. Remember your hair will get worse before it gets better. Wash regularly, rinse well, and don't goto bed with wet hair.
Thanks, I have been washing my hair about 2-3 times a week so my scalp doesn't get too dry. I finally just understand the rinse well part. I just washed my hair and was squishing the excess water out and found some more soap still left over. I finally rinsed it all out and it darn took a while. Any other tips or tricks? I have been making some dread beads too so hopefully that will help me out Here's the first picture I took of my dreads.
thanks, I actually just recently dyed them to a nice deep purple and my bangs are more of a purplish blue ( I mixed the blue and purple hair dye).
It seems like you are off to a great start just leave them for sometime and let timedo it's thing now
You know what you want, which is good. Nothing wrong with that path. Remember to rip the dreads apart- when they loosen (they will, so don't panic), they will want to start joining other dreads. Assuming you don't want massive congos, rip them apart after your hair is dry after washing (this is when I do mine). They WILL look like crud before they look awesome. Stay with it! Don't expect results for 6-8 months. Enjoy the ride!
