I've looked at alpha farms in Oregon a good bit, sent them an email and have yet to hear back. hobo is a bit harsh for what I'm imagining, im thinking somehwere between gypsy and traveling musician w/o the whole being a musician part.

I used to wonder if it was still possible too, and I've been assuming that there are probably thousands of "hobos" these days, given the economy. I recently learned from my 20-year-old daughter that they're called "travellers" these days, and it's not only possible, it's apparently thriving among younger homeless people. One of her best friends is supposedly coming through town on a freight sometime next week.

check out couchsurfing.com. wwoof.org, helpex.net :) couch surfing allows you to stay at others homes all around the world, for a few days, free. wwoof allows you to work on organic farms, all around the world, for a few months in exchange for food and shelter. helpex is similar to wwoof, but allows you to housesit/work in vineyards/work in hostels and bed and breakfasts, etc.
