I was riding to work with my aunt today and we passed a farmers stand with fruits and vegetables. She remarked something to the effect "Pretty trusting not having anyone tending to that stand" I told her there was a can to put the money in. Then she went on about people just taking more than their share or something of the like. So I was thinking is it her watching the morning & evening news causing this fear that people are out to rob, cheat, & steal or people generally afraid of having their stuff stolen?
There's one of those stands where i live too... People do take more than they pay for. People will just grab whatever change they have, put it in the little box, and just take a bag or two of fruits/vegitables. I really don't think the owners care though, they live in this massive mansion and sell most of their product to grocery stores and whatnot, the stuff on the stand is just what they have left over, it's either throw it out or put it out there for people to take. At least they make a little extra change on the side, they can't expect everyone to be completely honest and only take what they pay for, or pay at all. I don't really think fear has anything to do with it, it's just common knowledge that there are indeed people out there that steal and can't be trusted. It's just the way we are.
we have a big community garden here. hardly anyone uses it though, seems most people would rather eat shitty take out and park their ass in front of the black hole rather than be arsed to make a decent meal for themselves
i rarely watch the news. living with a couple thieves over the years is the main reason i realize some people would like to steal from you if given the opportunity.
oooh i stumbled into a spelling bee, and i thought i was just gonna comment on the fact that stealing has been around looooooooong before the news was ever thought of. (long was misspelled on purpose)
it looks that way those stands arent exactly at the entrance to the crack drive throughs...you never hear ''hey lets go get a 20 piece and stop at the frut stand for some corn'' they are near farms in farm country..not a lot of thieving crack head types .there is at most 50 bucks in total of veggies on those stands...the busy ones all have hot young farm girls working at them...i know this for a fact
This. They're always out in the country, the majority of the people that stop there are just the locals and old people anyways, i think they pay the right prices for the most part. But a lot of people do steal from them, i don't really think it's a huge deal though, all the stuff there is pretty much just left overs from what they couldn't sell to markets... Either set up a stand or let it rot away.
the Polish Museum just down the road from me has printer paper boxes full of apples.. a box is like $2.. and there is just a box there to pay for the apples.. no one watching
well not ALWAYS. i just passed one in town today. granted, it's a town of 1400 people, but it was still in town. your point is still accurate though.
there are a ton of veg/fruit stands and the like around where I live that practice 'trust'. people will often sell things at the end of their land and put a coffee can for money. also, there's an antique place that has you write down what you bought and put the money in a can. the feeling was that people usually leave more money than they ought to. i personally believe that trust draws more trust, and fear draws more fear.
