wales is and always has been represented within the 'g.b' banner for almost all olympian sports. so is scotland and north ireland. however in football and likely rugby we all are usually represented separately. the g.b football team at these olympics for example it was a first of its kind in the olympics and likely never to be seen again. however wales never qualify for anything so at rio my money is on only seeing england playing in the football. however - rugby is wales' national sport and needless to say we will be represented in rio as we are one of the best countries in the world playing it. there already is a gb team in rugby though (the british lions) so if a g.b team were to happen it would be something very similar to the aforementioned.
[sigh] I always go through a little bit of Olympic withdrawal for a few days afterward. I can't believe you forgot the women's soccer (football) team! atriot: They kicked ass! Also, for anyone who hasn't heard or read about Kayla Harrison's story (first gold medal in judo for USA) it is worth looking up. Besides the incredible personal stories, I also love the Olympics for the local culture and history, and for the opportunities to (at least for a moment) step outside of the chronic political divisions between us. For example, last week I saw North Korea and South Korea playing table tennis. Normally, they only interact when they shoot at each other across the border. This was a big improvement, even though it was temporary. This kind of thing is what they were alluding to when they played John Lennon's "Imagine" at the closing ceremonies. I totally get that. I can't believe the US has no serious contenders in this event, even though we more or less invented it (Google search: Esther Williams). There used to be multiple places in Florida where you could go see professionals put on these shows, but all of them have gone out of business. I would like this event better if they didn't do the creepy fake smiles all the time. I'm also at a loss to understand why the US sucks at rhythmic gymnastics. It's one of my favorite sports, combining music, dance, and gymnastics in creative and entertaining ways. A lot of American girls have grown up taking dance classes, so we should have a large pool of talent to draw from. Instead, the Russians dominate.
I think they should really broaden out and increase the number of gymnastics events at the Olympics. And if its all about flips, jumps and holding positions Dancing should be in the Olympics, even dare I say it Ballet Especially in terms of little dudes and dudettes watching the games, every second girl in grade school taking dance lessons. The Olympics still seems too much about boys sports. Synchronised swimming is just basically Water Ballet anyway, yet there isnt actual Ballet. They could easily fit another dozen or so gymastic events in, and mixed routines, I'd like to see that And if they are going to have BMX, they should have skateboarding too, which is a sport nowadays a lot of girls are into, and some sick aerials would make for awesome TV Instead they are putting Rugby back in, which most of the world doesnt play and Golf so crusty old guys have something to watch. If they are going to put in Rugby they should put in Netball and/or put Softball back in. The Olympics needs more chic sports
Seriously. Golf as an Olympic sport? I'd rather watch concrete set in slow motion. And rugby. WTF?? As a karate exponent, I'd LOOOVE to see both kata (forms) and kumite (fighting) in the Olympics, but it won't ever be as long as the embarassing version of TKD is there. Karate kumite is far better to watch, as it allows takedowns, sweeps and punches, none of which are legal in Olympic TKD as far as I know. And while they're at it, halve the number of swimming events. then halve them again.
those cameroon and congo athletes are still missing. Most people think they are hiding out in london so they dont have to go back to their countries where there is a war going on. If thats what they are doing i hope they find thei freedom in london and i wish them luck!
I remember at the opening ceremony of the LA Olympics as the flame was being carried up the steps to light cauldron, the Channel 7 commentator said, "This would have to be the most exciting event in the history of the world!" What more exciting than in the days of the Roman Colosseum when gladiators had to fight for lives? Even if your interests were entirely confined to sport , what about when Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile?
Or Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Summer games in which he stuck it to the Hitler and the third Reich by winning 4 gold medals :2thumbsup: Hotwater
Owen later said that he didn't get to shake hands with Hitler ..... but that he didn't get to shake hands with the president either. But Hitler sent Owens an autographed photo of himself.
every year that the Olympics come around i always think about how there shouldnt be judges. in my opinion it should be only about the fastest, farthest, highest. there shouldnt be any interpretation. in gymnastics it should be who does the most flips or pulls off the most difficult jump. that way no judge can say "their leg wasnt perfectly straight in that twist."
Surely you jest? Pretty short Olympics... lol And who would say what the most difficult "jump" was? Just say you think everyone should receive a gold medal, I can't tell if this post is serious to be honest.
Yeah, where's the balance? It seems like they have 100 swimming races, with all the qualifying heats. Track and field is almost as repetitious. The creative, music-based events get almost no TV time here. :toetap05: I have no problem with girls playing soccer, but it bothers me that we seem to be moving away from the idea that girls can be athletic, feminine, and graceful all at the same time. If anybody thinks that the moves they make in rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming are not difficult and physically demanding, they are quite wrong. Most of it is quite impossible for the average person. Even the regular gymnastics events for women have become less graceful than they used to be, with most of the dance elements taken out since '96. What or who is driving this trend? When I was in high school, all the straight guys would ten times rather watch a hot girl do a dance routine in Spandex than watch her play basketball in baggy shorts. And there was nothing us straight girls would rather do back then than compete for attention from guys, by any means necessary. I can remember when a dance background was the best preparation for cheerleading. Now it's all about dangerous gymnastic stunts without any mats under them, and injury rates have exploded. Maybe we have too many fathers who wish that their daughters were sons. The Atlanta games had their problems, but I think the sports commentators give them too much of a hard time. There were some great moments in '96, and the city did a lot of things right. Their building plan was less wasteful than most, with a lot of existing downtown venues being used and also a lot of on-campus facilities at Georgia Tech, including student dorms used for athlete housing. As I recall, the small area that was demolished for the Olympic Village (near the GWCC & the aquarium) used to be mostly ratty old warehouses and abandoned factories. Turner Field and the old Fulton County Stadium were both used for the games, standing side by side for only a few months. The worst thing Atlanta did was fudge on their climate data, leading the IOC to believe that the average heat and humidity were milder than they really were. Honestly, who in their right mind wants to play outdoor sports in the middle of an early August afternoon in Atlanta? :ack2: And they should have known that Marta would be terribly overloaded. It's busy enough on a normal day, between Five Points and Midtown.
