My husband may be transferring to New Bern, NC with his job. I am excited but a little nervous. We have children and I was wondering if anyone has been here or lived near here and could tell me their thoughts on the area.

Any advice at all would be helpful, we have never been and this could be a permanent move for us.

Well, I think downtown is kind of cool, especially the two riverfronts and the historic district around Tryon Palace, and you will probably love having easy access to Emerald Isle and Beaufort. Also, the National Park Service runs passenger ferries to Cape Lookout. This region is all about outdoor recreation and history.

I used to know a family that had lived in New Bern for a while. They said it was a great place to own a boat, because you can actually use it to go places, instead of just going around in circles in a lake. They always used their boat to make seafood runs to Beaufort.

I don't know what your financial situation is, but some folks in New Bern spend a little less on their primary house so they can afford a weekend getaway place on Emerald Isle, Ocracoke, or even Bald Head Island. I think all three are special places that your kids would love.

When you get in the mood for a larger city, Raleigh is actually easier to get to than Wilmington, because of the traffic conditions. Both cities have a lot going on. :)

The winters are mild, summers are sunny, and you're about as close to the Atlantic as I would ever want to live, because of the hurricanes. That's about all I know about the place. Have fun!

Wow, thank you so much for all the great information. All of the pictures I have seen of the area are beautiful and we are definitely outdoorsy, water-type people! Sounds like it could be a great experience :) We will be renting to start off with, do you know of any neighborhoods that I should avoid?
