Ever written something and then realize it's already written because it sounds so familiar, then you're like "oh crap" I'm trying to think outside the chuck berry style bended root note on the g string, followed by the b and high-e strings two frets lower in triplets, and then some major chords and suspended fourths... ummm, box. I thought I wrote that one when I was 12. I think the stones already have that covered. I need new influences.
Listen to some Hendrix, he's always good if you want to start thinking outside the box. Thing is about lead, that unless your doing a REALLY distinctive riff, no-one will notice anyway, if it is too similar then just change the rythym, the key, the order you play it in, and most importantly, be expressive with it and make it your own. Oh yeah, and do make it sound awesome. Blessings Sebbi
yeah. make it sound awesome! your sound and rhythm are what makes it. you seem to be able to break riffs down theoretically, but try forgetting all that for a little. maybe get wasted for a session? good luck.
I have a solo that I recorded (no vocals) of Born Under A Bad Sign... (Clapton)... but it sounds like Stevie Ray Vaughan. I did it in a studio this weekend.. it's kinda.. creepy.
riffs are almost never original. for example the song by Deep Purple "Black Night" is the same as "We Aint Got Nothin Yet" by the Blues Magoos.
Its really hard to do stuff with the blues that hasn't been done before. The key isn't really in the riffs, its mostly in the phrasing, but also vibrato, taste, and soul that seperates people from each other. I've been trying to throw some dissonance into my licks, but its a fine line between making it sound interesting and sounding like you're making mistakes I think in the end the blues are about personality, you either can convey feeling through the guitar, or you can't regardless of chops.
