Doctors are there to help you, if you think the dosage is too high then it most likely is. Just let the doctor know that, and it's done.

I've taken prozac before and found myself feeling zombie-ish, do you get that?

Just tell him you'd like to try a lower dosage. Shouldn't be a big deal. He'll probably want you to let him know how it's going in a few weeks after changing the dosage.

Just tell the doc you'd like to try it with a lower dose. Anti-depressants aren't something you "take as needed" though. You have to be on it or wean off it. You might ask about something you can take as needed if anxiety or something similar is the problem.

    Good luck. :grouphug:

Send your doctor an e-mail or leave a VM message to express your desire if you feel you can’t confront him/her.

Tell him that you are feeling better and you would like to try small dose and see what happens.
He will tell you that bad things will come again, because you need to take it for few years till it starts working. ( unless you are taking it for few years already )

It depends on the type of doctor you have. If you said you already brought this up before and he dismissed your feelings about you're going to need to go in there with either a lot of knowledge or with the attitude that you are paying your doctor to help you with your health and not to dictate and belittle your authority to make your own health care decisions...if you still have an issue, you need to find another doctor.

He should compassionately, honestly and respectfully address your concerns and not just tell you what he wants you to do. Doctors can be quite notorious at ignoring their patients knowledge of their own conditions...don't let your concerns go ignored.

Personally (and not that I'm recommending this) I weaned myself from several anti-depressants because I found it difficult to be empowered about making my own health decisions when the doctor won't actually discuss or listen to you.

Well, I'm a girl that's 5'4 about 115pds, and Welbutrin worked the best for me, and I've been through many antidepressants before. Thankfully though, I don't take them anymore...turns out the doctors found out I have "ADD" which in turn, Adderal as a replacement for the "depression" that was caused by "ADD" from having it and not getting the proper help, and some Kolnopin for any anxiety or anxiousness. It's a good combo for me. Maybe you should consider these as an option, but I don't recommend it if you might have a high addiction tolerance. It may make things worse.

Doctors and antidepressants are two things I have a rather negative opinion about... but it's just two things of many.

But, it's your decision, and your doctor needs to listen to you.

    Personally, I wouldn't recommend antidepressants to anyone. I don't take them, and I won't.

As far as I remember, Prozac comes in capsules -- not tablets that can be broken in half.

I took Prozac for a short while when I was 15-16 (this was in the mid 90s). I remember at the time they were green capsules.

I personally think its a choice everyone needs to make for themselves with full knowledge of their alternatives and their risks.

I've seen many, many people have horrible experiences with both the drugs and negligent doctors.

At the same time I've seen people who wouldn't have had any other way to snap out of very limiting thought patterns without a huge breaking point, which may not have happened for a long time...without the drugs.

I think they can be useful short-term. Doctors always like to tell you you have to stay on them forever and how screwed up you'll be without them...that's just not true. You have to do your own research, tell your doctor how you feel about it and if your doctor doesn't respect your wishes see that it is his loss for not being open-minded and seeing you as an intelligent person, rather than just see you in the light of his own limited view on treating illnesses...

My experience was that the last time I was prescribed medication, I had 4 different medications and was told I'd need to be on them for life. I quickly stopped taking one realizing it was pointless. Then I lowered my dose of the others...while I stopped taking these I added some positive things to help me deal with my issues.

You can't just take them out of your system without adding something good to help you deal with your issues. For me, I completely changed my diet, lifestyle and thought patterns during the months in which I weaned off the drugs. I'm glad I had them to hold me over while I was searching for better, more sustainable, safe and long-term options.

If I say anything I will get accused of interfering with someones medical situation that his precious doctor with is precious degree has completely under control...

But I'm gonna say it anyways...

Get off that shit as soon as you can, SSRI and SNRI drugs are a fuckin trap, man. Mister fancy pants with the BMW is going to say "Well you feel better because it's working. You need to stay on it, probably for the rest of your life. We may need to adjust your dosage higher at some point unless it stops working completely. At that point we need to try the newest wonder pill that some drug rep told me to sell."

You know the new drug that makes you wonder what the fuck happened to your life...

    [/rant]

    Sorry, Cymbalta nearly killed me...

Hope your luck is better... carry on!

I agree that you should feel like you are in control of your own medications. If you feel you need a lower dose, your doctor should respect your wishes. That said, I do not feel like all prescription medications for mood and whatnot are necessarily bad, I do feel like they are grossly over prescribed.. Maybe you do need it, but I don't think it's right of your doctor to dismiss your requests.. Like everyone said, read up on whatever you can and go to him with informed an intelligent requests. Hope it works out for you.

I had to stop something once because i didnt feel any benefits and the side effects were horrendous headaches that i just couldnt take anymore..so i just read up about it on the internet and started doing like azucena suggested and cut the pills into thirds..took 2 thirds for a while...then broke some into halves and took halves ..then thirds again but just took 1 third...then nothing

then after getting off them I informed the doctor what I did and why I did it:cool:

he said what Tyrsonswood said he would say but i didnt give a shit
