This movie has been out since June 22, and got good reviews but it was low on my must see list. I do enjoy Disney Pixar animated movies - they are often just amazingly detailed art on screen. So, suffering from no new releases and movie withdrawal today, I used my bonus ticket to pick up this flick.

It is set in Medieval Scotland where the red haired Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly MacDonald) is one of those strong-willed girls who do not conform to the role pushed on her by society and taught to her by her mother Queen Elinor (Voiced by Emma Thompson).

Her father, King Fergus (voiced by Billy Connolly) is more an easygoing but hands on warrior, who has lost a leg to a demon of a bear and is obsessed with finding and killing it. He indulges his daughter and teaches her how to battle. She eventually excels with the bow.

As she grows older she is to be betrothed to a young man from one of the three other clans who must compete for her hand. She gets to pick the competition and it is archery. As shown in the trailers, she competes for her own hand and beats all the inept male contenders in the competition. This does not go well with her mother and causes strife amongst the often warring clans.

Know that this PG rated movie covers a dynamic of teen daughters rebelling against their mothers. Merida runs off to the forest on her steed, Angus (beautifully animated BTW) and comes upon a witch who offers to help her 'change' her mother. Now we all know that these deals with witches always have fine print of which we are not aware. There is change, there are problems with that and the rest of the story is one of discovery and bonding between mother and daughter as they work together to solve the problem.

As with Ratatouille, this movie was beautifully animated and you could lose yourself in the scenery, especially the beautiful landscapes that make you forget it was all computer generated imaging. There was the usual PG grossness that only a kid could appreciate, but the slapstick humor not too bad.

There were also dramatic moments that felt quite real - enuf so to make me wonder how CGI scenes could elicit such emotional response. It was a well-made movie and I enjoyed it.

i absolutely adore this film. it's my favourite pixar animation to date.

i think the central theme of mother and daughter relationships was moving, and played out in a very real way. the supernatural elements to the story were also a nice touch, but not of the overbearing "chosen one must save the world" variety. it was fantastical, but in a lovely grounded sort of way.

    i thoroughly recommend this film.

Thank you, Shale. I wasn't sure about seeing that one, but now I want to.

I have a young daughter and the usual Disney princesses are not allowed in my house. ;)

let me assure you, daisymae, this is a disney princess with actual substance. she acts like a real teenage daughter would in her situation, and has a satisfying, emotional character arc.
