i'm a freshman at loyola university chicago... i dunno...this semester has more often than not sucked... Earlier this semester i felt like I was doing too much work with not enough pay back. I was really stressed out and my body was reacting weirdly. I took sometime off of homework and just chilled out and now everything feels much better.... it sucks though.... it seems to me that living at home + college life (or the almost absence of that life) = crappy... This morning my mom woke me up bitching that she never sees me doing any homework and that I've been too nonchalant about getting work done or even getting to school... well the fact of the matter is I DONT WANT TO GO.... and so.....I chill at home as long as I can...before I rush off..... I don't like being rushed... It seems like there's so much pressure on me right now.... I'm sure lots of other people feel this way too... Please reply...solidarity?

yeah i get you...you're not alone in this. I'm too living at home and in my first year of uni, and though it doesnt suck as much as in the beginning, it's still a bit too much...a lot of work and less social life...but as long as you set your priorities right and do your thing, it's fine.
it's good to chill from time to time to relieve the stress and all and i understand what you say about not being pressured, i feel the same way. you just need to tell your mum you know what you are doing and that you need to balance your life cos you cant live your life around your college work only, you also need time for yourself, for your health sake
anyway, hope you're not too stressed out!! x-mas holidays are coming soon so you'll have some time to relax!

yes, I think most everyone has noticed that college sucks.

There are times when it does, and times when it doesn't. When it gets to be too much, take some time off and chill. That is your right.

If you can, just keep in mind why (if you know why) you're in college. There was a time when I had no idea what I was doing in college, and so I dropped out. But a couple of years later, I realized that I really wanted to be there, and I went back. Lucky me, I hadn't fucked everything up so much that I couldn't go back. Now here I am, on my way to a degree, in a field that I love.

These things don't happen overnight. It took years for me to sort out the most-right way of getting through college. And I am still defining that. Sometimes I just want to leave and never look back. Other times I love being here. I am holding on to the fact that staying here for 2 more years will enable me to do what I want for the rest of my life. That prospect outweighs the endless bullshit that is inherent in the college experience.

    Hang in there ;)

exactly! nothing seems too bad when you know you're doing it for the right reasons.

i've always pretty much loved college - i love the challenge and even the stress, and finishing things and feeling like you actually accomplished something.

just make sure to take some YOU time so as not to feel overly pressured. take a class that you enjoy in addition to the ones you have to take, so you feel like your education is really benefitting you in the now. good luck on exams and enjoy your christmas break!! :)

Sounds like you need to go and smoke a joint at Albion Beach. Maybe go to Hamiltons and have a beer. Forget Hamiltons, I perfer the "O" myself................

Collage is strait if you ask me but i wanna learn and everything. highschool sucked becsue i didn't give a damn about anything. Now that i wanna learn its much easiier. the only thing that sucks is having a morning and night class on the same day as well as having an hour commute. thats like a 19 hour day. If you do school live close to campuse. sence i commute i barley meet anyone. i went to the dorms one day with a friend and met a shit load of people. its worth the extra cash.

College is what you make of it. If you choose a major that will help you make lots of money in the future but that doesn't excite you, then you're going to be miserable. No matter what your major is, if you don't bother to go to class, you're not going to get much out of it & will have to study a lot harder than those who go to class if you want to pass.

If you don't want to be in school right now, take some time off. Go find out what you want to do -- if you find that you don't need school, great, otherwise you will probably learn that no matter how bad you think your classes are, they are a hell of a lot better than working a crappy ass min. wage job.

You say that you are a freshman. Things will change after the second year.
The junior and senior years are spent mostly in classes in your major, which means that your classmates are interested in what they are learning, not just fulfilling some requirement. That will change the atmosphere of the class for the better. Once you are in classes surrounded by people who are interested in what they and you are doing, you will find college much more fun.

If there is no subject you are interested in and you are just going to get the paper to get the job, that's a shame.

College, like everything, is precisely what you make of it... Unfortunately, you can't just School-of-Athens style go to whatever classes you really want to b/c of dept. "requirements." Well, maybe you can - our school has a generic University Studies degree, so, aside from all the dreadful core classes, you could graduate and meanwhile take only swimming, sailing, backpacking, theatre, art, music, soc, psy, phil, whatever you fancy taking.
But more generally, even if you like your major, there will always be boring classes and work that you really don't wanna do, so the choices become...
    A) Throw yourself totally into the local social scene inhabited by yer new drugged-out friends, never study or go to classes and fail everything, perhaps getting a second chance and perhaps not. (works best for those whose parents are footing the entire bill)
    B) Maintain a balance of hard-partying and studious behavior, in theory only hitting the bar on weekends (and never at finals), in theory passing everything and still keeping up appearances with the IN group.
(this can work, but it depends on the level and the intensity of the drug-seeking behavior)
    C) Fall in love with a new person every semester, get serious and move in t/g into like 5 different places, inevitably break up and realize you were never much of a bf/gf anyways. Meanwhile probably fail out.
    D) Fall in love with many new people every semester, sleep with them, and afterwards... a.) forget about and deny it all. b.) reminisce and write poetry about it for months. c.) not think about it b/c you're onto more flings (in any case, probably party too much and fail out)
    E) Go straight, get a daily planner, do your work, party only occasionally (and never to excess, difficult), and succeed in reaching your goals, despite ineveitable flings and other drama.
    F) Some people fail b/c of videogames and stuff like comic books and RPG's. How pathetic is that? C'mon... get with it.
    G) You are an A student. You are going places. You're involved on campus, You don't and won't do drugs. You're golden, don't worry about anything till first heart attack. Then change your diet or somethin, you'll be fine...
After trying A-D, E finally worked for me, but it was just the right time to change (or so The Man said) Anyways ~ ha thx 4 reading
